The Department of War Studies is seeking applications for the post of Lecturer in Middle Eastern Studies Education. Appointments to the Academic Education Pathway (AEP) are focused on the delivery of education involving support in module design and delivery, collaborating in the production of education-related scholarship and being a part of a leadership community in advancing educational pedagogies and delivery.  

The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of teaching in the Department of War Studies, in particular its MA programme Conflict Resolution in Divided Societies. The successful applicant will: 

  • Have a PhD in some aspect of Middle Eastern Studies. 
  • Undertake teaching on the MA programme Conflict Resolution in Divided Societies and on Middle Eastern Studies at BA level, and on other BA and MA modules as required. 
  • Deliver the appropriate learning materials, examine students’ work, and supervise BA and MA student projects. 
  • Be adequately mentored and supported in this role, working closely with the MA Programme Director and education committee members. 
  • Have a commitment to undertake research and collaborate in publishing high-quality scholarship.  
  • Play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of War Studies and undertake Departmental, School, Faculty and University administrative duties as required.

This post will be offered on a fixed term contract for 1 year.

Key responsibilities

  • To take a role in the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching activities within the Department in accordance with established departmental practice. 
  • Act as personal tutor to students as agreed with the Head of Department and assist with difficulties, e.g., learning support problems. 
  • Participate fully in assessment and examination processes as appropriate using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning. 
  • Commit to undertake high-quality scholarship in the subject area, publish the findings in highly rated internationally recognised journals, and participate in the major internationally recognised academic networks. 
  • Accept academic responsibility within the Department and School, involving departmental administrative responsibilities in respect of student services, student recruitment and advice as well as participating in aspects of School governance on School committees. 
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department. 
  • Identify programme development needs and propose how these should be achieved. 
  • Cooperate with colleagues in designing, delivering and assessing modules through conventional means and through e-learning. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues on implementation of assessment procedures. 
  • Contribute to accreditation and quality control processes. 
  • Ensure student needs and expectations are met. 
  • Manage projects relating to own area of scholarship. 
  • Take responsibility for administrative duties such as admissions, recruitment, examinations, attendance, etc.

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria

  • PhD in Middle Eastern Studies, Politics, International Relations, International History, Conflict Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, or another related discipline, with a focus on relevant subject matter. 
  • Experience of teaching on related subject areas. 
  • A track record in both campus-based and online delivery, indicating experience in innovative pedagogical practices. 
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team. 
  • Familiarity with innovative curriculum and teaching design practices and pedagogies. 
  • Commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion practices within and outside the department. 
  • Ability to add to the diversity of subject matter expertise among the academic staff associated with the Conflict Resolution in Divided Societies programme in the Department of War Studies. 
  • An emerging agenda in education related scholarship, and a proven capacity to relate this to teaching.  
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. 
  • Desirable criteria

  • Excellent organizational skills. 
  • Experience of working in, or interacting with, governmental departments. 
  • A track record of wider administrative contribution to the delivery of departmental activities.
