This is a permanent appointment on a full-time ‘balanced’ contract (40% teaching, 40% research, 20% leadership, management and engagement), tenable from 1 September 2024, but with a flexible start date.You will be a practice-led researcher with a developing track record of research outputs and will have begun to acquire higher education teaching experience. You will teach creative music technology and production primarily within popular music contexts to undergraduate and postgraduate students. In foregrounding social justice – or the pursuit of equity and fairness in musical life – across our curriculum and depending on your expertise and interests, you will also contribute to teaching in music education, sustainability and community music. The ability to contribute to performance and composition teaching in areas such as songwriting, electronic music and/or composing for screen is welcome.You will join the Southampton Centre for Music Education and Social Justice (CMESJ), contributing to the Centre’s activities and self-governance. You may, for example, engage in your practice with people with dementia or hearing loss, migrant and refugee populations, disabled communities, or lower-income schools and/or pursue research around the structural, racial, gendered and socio-economic legacies that impact music today.You will pursue a programme of creative and/or scholarly research, contributing to our research environment by disseminating your work to academic and non-academic audiences. You will have completed, or be about to complete, a PhD in a related field, or be able to demonstrate equivalent professional experience. You will have the potential to contribute to the Department’s research ecosystem by applying for funding on your own or as part of larger teams.You will supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects, and support students pastorally as a personal academic tutor. You will have the ability to adapt your teaching approaches effectively for an international students.You will join a vibrant and forward-looking academic community in the Department of Music at Southampton, a centre of exceptional research and teaching in musicology, ethnomusicology, social justice, performance, composition, music technology, production, music therapy, community music, music education and music business. You will contribute to the Department, School and Faculty of Arts and Humanities Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise activities. You will take on a management role appropriate to your experience and expertise, and be mentored by our Director of Programmes, Head of Research and Enterprise, and Head of Department.As a university we are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equal opportunities.
