Lecturer in One Health Microbiology/Antimicrobial Resistance (Research & Teaching Track)The School of Biodiversity One Health and Veterinary Medicine is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in One Health Microbiology/Antimicrobial Resistance to carry out high-quality research in the area of, or allied with, bacteriology/microbiology and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), with a One Health perspective that cuts across both human and animal health. Research interests could include but are not limited to mechanisms of bacterial resistance, identification of novel antimicrobial agents, the epidemiology of AMR and development of strategies to combat AMR. In addition, you will deliver engaging lectures and design rigorous laboratory exercises to undergraduate and postgraduate students, with a focus on bacteriology, AMR, and mycology, and in so doing foster their intellectual growth and scientific curiosity. By integrating research and teaching, provide undergraduate and post graduate students with a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of bacteriology/microbiology and AMR, preparing them to address current and emerging challenges in the field. The position will be in the Research and Teaching job family, and you will be based in the north of the city of Glasgow on the Garscube Campus.We are particularly interested in candidates experienced with bacterial infections and AMR in a veterinary context. The successful candidate would be joining the One Health Research into Bacterial Infectious Diseases (OHRBID – https://www.ohrbidglasgow.com/) group and complement the systems and approaches of existing members.We welcome applications from candidates with a PhD or equivalent clinical/research training in a relevant subject area with relevant research and higher education teaching experience.Job PurposeTo carry out high-quality research in the area of, or allied with, bacteriology/microbiology and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), with a One Health perspective that cuts across both human and animal health. To develop and contribute to interdisciplinary collaborations, secure external funding, publish high-impact research findings in peer-reviewed journals and supervise research students and staff. To deliver engaging lectures and design rigorous laboratory exercises to undergraduate and postgraduate students, with a focus on bacteriology, AMR, and mycology, and in so doing foster their intellectual growth and scientific curiosity. By integrating research and teaching, provide undergraduate and post graduate students with a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of bacteriology/microbiology and AMR, preparing them to address current and emerging challenges in the field.Main Duties and Responsibilities1. To develop a portfolio of high-quality research activity as evidenced by publications and appropriate levels of external funding in bacteriology and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and associated areas.2. To supervise and mentor research students and early career research staff.3. To develop research networks to build critical mass in relevant research area.4. To participate in the teaching of theoretical and practical skills in bacteriology, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and mycology.5. To take responsibility for the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage in the examination process as appropriate and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.6. To contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum, particularly regarding bacteriology and mycology, in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning.7. To undertake administrative duties as requested by the Head of School and to lead specific initiatives to enhance the research environment and learning experience.8. To participate in quality assurance and enhancement activities, curriculum review and programme re-accreditation with the University and professional bodies to ensure high quality education provision is maintained.9. To participate in the Advisor of Studies (student mentorship) Programme and assist students with difficulties.10. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile and innovation strategy in line with University, College and School objectives.Knowledge/Qualifications, Skills and ExperienceKnowledge/QualificationsEssential:A1. PhD or equivalent clinical/research training in a relevant subject area.Desirable:B1. Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.SkillsEssential:C1. Enthusiasm and ability for teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.C5. Knowledge of bacterial diseases, AMR and mycology in relation to animal health and from a one health perspective.C6. Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.C7. Time, project and people management skills. C8. Ability to supervise and direct technical staff in the support of research and teaching activities.C9. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.C10. Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically. C11. Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.For Appointment to Grade 8C12. Track record of successful research grant income.C13. At least 4 research outputs at 3* level.Desirable:D1. Data analysis skills at an advanced level. D2. Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.ExperienceEssential:E1. Minimum 3 years’ relevant research experience.E2. Higher education teaching experience.Desirable:F1. Experience in the delivery of teaching and practical skills training at undergraduate or postgraduate level.F2. Experience in the delivery of consultancy or professional practice related to AMR.Additional InformationThe School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine (SBOHVM) is based in the north of the city of Glasgow on the Garscube estate and is a constituent of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences.BVMS programmeThe SBOHVM currently offers a 5 year professional Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVMS) programme and a BSc/MSc veterinary bioscience programme and this position would be expected to support these two programmes.
