Job description

The Philosophy Department at King’s College London is seeking to appoint a fixed-term (one year) Lecturer with expertise in the history of philosophy, modern period, including Spinoza and Leibniz.  Research specialization, competence and ability to teach at all levels and supervise postgraduate students in that area is required and teaching competence in epistemology at undergraduate and MA level is also required; research expertise in this area is desirable.

King’s Philosophy Department is one of the largest and most distinguished departments in the UK. We have particular research strengths in the history of philosophy, philosophy of mind and psychology, philosophy of language and logic, metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy of science, and moral and political philosophy.

This post will be offered on a full-time, fixed term contract for 12 months from 1st September 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Key responsibilities

  • To contribute to the teaching at BA and MA levels of Philosophy as directed by the Head of Department in the candidate’s areas of expertise and competence 
  • To supervise BA, MA and Postgraduate students in Philosophy in the candidate’s areas of expertise and competence 
  • To undertake research for publication and to contribute to the research culture of the Department and the advancement of the discipline  
  • To participate in setting and marking assessment, to attend Examiners’ meetings, and to complete student reports and assessment forms for undergraduate and postgraduate students as required 
  • To act as personal tutor, providing pastoral care to assigned tutees 
  • To carry out administrative duties assigned by the Head of Department 

The above list of responsibilities is indictive rather than exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected given the scope and grading of the post.  

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria

1.       PhD in Philosophy – viva passed at time of appointment 

2.       Research achievement and outstanding capacity for advanced research in the history of philosophy, especially in the modern period.

3.       Ability and willingness to teach and supervise students in the history of philosophy (modern period) and in epistemology, together with outstanding ability to engage undergraduate and postgraduate students.

4.       Ability and willingness to manage effectively administrative tasks as needed for the running of the Department, the Faculty, and the College. 

5.       Ability and willingness to support students at all levels in their academic development, with a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Start date: 1st September 2023.  

This post will be offered on an fixed-term contract of 12 months.

The selection process will include a teaching presentation on a topic tbc, and a panel interview. These will take place around the second week of August.
