Job PurposeLecturer on Diploma in Professional Legal Practice (Learning, Teaching & Scholarship Track)The School of Law plays a key role in the development of those planning to enter the legal profession in Scotland by offering a first-class professional postgraduate qualification. Fully accredited by the Law Society of Scotland, the School of Law delivers the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice (DPLP) as well as Trainee Continuing Professional Development (TCPD).This key position within the DPLP team will support the Director and Deputy Director in leading the strategic design and development, delivery and sustainability of the DPLP, within the School of Law, to provide postgraduate professional training to those entering the legal profession, as well as further training for trainees.Main Duties and Responsibilities1. Contribute to the development of the DPLP and associated TCPD activities to ensure effective delivery of College and School strategic objectives as a leader in the delivery of cutting edge postgraduate legal education.2. Take an active role in the planning, organisation and delivery of high-quality employability and networking events within the DPLP and TCPD activities, in support of the School of Law’s aims and objectives.3. Oversee all internal student competitions associated with the DPLP e.g. UK Student Mediation Competition, International Client Consultation Competition and International Negotiation Competition and support the School’s participation in external competitions.4. Support the Director and Deputy Director in the ongoing development and design of the curriculum to deliver a research-led and scholarly-informed approach to student learning and help share these results with colleagues and the wider educational community.5. Contribute to the development of the DPLP’s reputation with key stakeholders including developing links with relevant national and international organisations with a view to enhancing teaching and scholarship and the profile of the programme.6. Take an active role in supporting the Director and Deputy Director to strengthen links and build relationships with all branches of the legal profession, relevant national and international governmental organisations and other external groups with a view to enhancing the School’s profile with the profession and developing TCPD opportunities.7. Assist the Director and Deputy Director in the supervision, training and continual development of tutors.8. Support student recruitment activity in collaboration with the Director and Deputy Director and other relevant colleagues to ensure that the DPLP and associated TCPD activities meet their objectives and develop into a sustainable programme for the long-term.9. Take an active role in the orientation, induction and pastoral care of students, providing careers advice and guidance to students in collaboration and alignment with the School, College and University’s student support and employability teams, to enhance student wellbeing and employability.10. Assume appropriate leadership roles at School, College and University levels, as assigned by the Director and/or Head of School.Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and ExperienceKnowledge /QualificationsEssential:A1 Experience in legal practice, including qualification as a solicitor or advocate in Scotland or Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) in a related discipline.A2 Developing professional reputation within the legal communityA3 Comprehensive and up to date knowledge of the Law Society of Scotland’s requirements for professional legal education and understanding of their implicationsA4 Awareness of current developments in professional legal practice and legal education to inform teaching practicesDesirable:B1 Dual qualification in Scotland and another jurisdictionSkillsEssential:C1 Excellent organisational and motivational skillsC2 Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and written, with the ability to engage at all levels within the School, College, University, and beyond in the professional and academic communitiesC3 Ability to develop and maintain good relations with the legal profession, professional bodies and other relevant organisationsC4 An empathetic approach in dealing with students who have encountered problems, both academic and personalC5 Self-motivation and resilience with the ability to effectively work independently and as part of a teamC6 Ability for independent thought to engage in scholarshipC7 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act appropriatelyExperienceEssentialE1 Experience of post-qualifying legal practice or at least two years’ experience of professional legal educationE2 Experience in the delivery of legal educationE3 Experience of the pastoral care of students or traineesE4 Experience of engagement with external stakeholders and developing partnershipsTerms and ConditionsSalary will be Grade 7, £40,497 – £45,413 per annum.This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended.The University of Glasgow has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
