This is an opportunity to make your mark in a research-led School of Chemistry that has recently benefited from a multimillion-pound investment. You will join a team that is focused on developing sustainable and innovative approaches to chemical understanding – advancing organic chemistry in its broadest sense.

Are you an expert in organic chemistry seeking to establish or grow an ambitious research programme? Have you written proposals or secured grants to support distinctive work that will be recognised both nationally and internationally? Are you looking to take the next step in your career on the way to a full professorship?

The University of Southampton is in the top 1% of universities worldwide – a reflection of our exceptional reputation for research and student experience. Within our School, we combine teaching and research to transform scientific understanding, helping our students to broaden their horizons.

As an academic with us you will plan and coordinate a broad research programme, addressing issues that are affecting our planet. Acting as the principal investigator on a range of projects, you will take responsibility for defining original research objectives, developing and managing staff, and attracting funding through grant applications.

We will look to you to contribute to developing our international reputation for research. You will regularly disseminate your findings through peer-reviewed publications, major conferences, and/or public engagement events. Alongside this, you will make an active contribution to the development of the School’s teaching and learning programme, delivering teaching in organic chemistry to all levels through lectures, tutorials, practical laboratory classes and seminars.

To succeed in this role, you will grow a portfolio in teaching and research, with your work appearing in top quality publications. As you progress, you will become adept at securing grants, and will establish a track record of delivering against your research and teaching agenda.  You will relish the chance to work collaboratively to deliver research and teaching outcomes across a range of areas and academic disciplines.

Central to our school ethos is providing all our staff and students with a diverse and inclusive working environment where they can flourish without barriers. We are proud of our Athena SWAN Silver Award (since 2015) that recognises our commitment to improving equality for women. We welcome female applicants and candidates from under-represented minority ethnic backgrounds. We will help you find a good work/life balance with flexible working hours. We offer an exceptional benefits package with onsite childcare facilities, a contributory pension scheme, a generous holiday allowance, subsidised health and fitness facilities and a cycle-to-work scheme.

Committed to developing your skills in a world-class environment? Then get in touch. For more information, please contact Prof David Harrowven ([email protected]

Please submit your CV and your research proposal (no more than four pages long) with your application form.
