School of Law and Politics

The School of Law and Politics at Cardiff University is seeking to appoint Lecturers / Senior Lecturers (Grades 6-8) in Law. 

The successful candidates will be or have the potential to be: excellent teachers and scholars; be close to completing or already hold a PhD or equivalent professional expertise in Law or a cognate field by the time the appointment begins; and have an ambitious research agenda that supports and/or expands the School’s current research strengths. The specific area(s) of legal research expertise within Law are open. From a teaching perspective, however, there is a particular interest in appointing candidates who have the ability and willingness to teach Family Law, Obligations, Healthcare Law, Clinical Legal Education (including pro bono work), Property Law, Maritime Law, Commercial Law and Competition/IP Law.

The post holders may also supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and contribute to the successful administration and management of the Law School.

Salary:
£36,333 – £43,155 per annum (Grade 6)
£45,737 – £52,841 per annum (Grade 7)
£54,421 – £63,059 per annum (Grade 8)

Job Description

As a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer at Cardiff Law School the successful applicant will be required to deliver high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and contribute to the research record of the School through commitment to carrying out research leading to the publishing of high-quality research.  The successful applicant should be an active and collegiate member of the school community and contribute to every aspect of school life.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Research
•    To conduct original and innovative research within the discipline of Law and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in academic journals, attending conferences and/or producing other research outputs.
Grade 7:  Contribute to internationally recognised research performance
Grade 8: Publish in international journals and/or other research output

•    To deliver conference/seminar papers at a local and national level.
Grade7: Present at conferences at national and international level, building networks through regular conference/seminar presentations to develop research outputs within the area of specialism.
Grade 8: Present at international level, working towards standing in the international field.

•     To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding
Grade 7 & 8: Independently develop research projects capable of achieving funding, acting as PI as required.
•    To actively participate in School research activities and the research and scholarship community.
Grade 8:  Contribute fully to the management of postgraduate research
•    Have the potential to contribute to impact case studies, if appropriate.
•    To contribute to the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students to PhD supervision, as a co-supervisor, reviewer, or supervisor.

Teaching
•    To design and deliver teaching programmes for courses and contribute to module development as part of a module team.
Grade 6: To inspire students by delivering effective undergraduate / postgraduate student teaching under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
Grade 7: Independently contribute to module and course development and to lead modules.
Grade 8: Lead on degree & module development and contribute to pedagogy of subject area.

•    To effectively undertake of scholarship to a high standard including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration and participation in committee work.
•    To deliver high quality pastoral care of students including as a Personal Tutor.
•    To supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students and the co-supervision of PGR’s
Grade 7 & 8: Act as a PGR progress review panel member as required.
•    Demonstrate a commitment to professional development and engage in the peer review processes.
•    To participate in the teaching community including committee membership and student engagement activities.

Leadership – Grade 8 only
•    To provide academic leadership by co-ordinating the work of others to ensure areas of research/degree courses are organised and delivered effectively.
•    To be involved in the departmental level strategic planning and contribute to wider strategic planning processes in the University.
•    Undertake and lead operational administrative duties

Qualifications and Education

1.    To have obtained or be near completion of a postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area by the time the appointment begins or equivalent professional expertise in Law or a cognate field by the time the appointment begins/ Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience
Grade 7 & 8: Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning Fellowship of the HEA or equivalent qualification or experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

2.    An established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience. We welcome any area of legal research.
Grade 8: Well established experience and a significant proven portfolio

3.    The proven ability to publish in national journals and/or other research outputs
