Job PurposeTo carry out research and scholarship in the area of Physical Chemistry, deliver an excellent student experience through teaching and assessment as well as contribute to management and administration. At Grade 8 and 9, demonstrate leadership and contribute to academic and strategic management.Main Duties and Responsibilities1. Pursue and deliver independent research proposals and/or collaborative research projects, project managing research activities, supervising and taking responsibility for the research team. Securing external resources to support research individually and/or jointly, as appropriate to the subject area.2. Develop an expert reputation in the field by effective dissemination and publishing of research findings in leading journals and conferences, and where appropriate undertaking knowledge exchange activities.3. Make a substantial contribution to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College. Establishing and leading research collaborations with appropriate individuals and groups within the University, including multi-disciplinary links, and developing external research collaborations both nationally and internationally, to ensure that research activities are at the forefront of the field.4. Actively contribute to the effective management and administration of the College/School, assuming responsibility for the management of allocated resources and contributing to the wider organisation of the subject area.5. Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.6. Develop effective approaches which enhance intellectual understanding and innovation in the field and support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.7. Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face and potentially online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem- based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.8. Develop effective working relationships with students and early career staff in the subject specialism, providing specialist advice, support and academic leadership. Work in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.9. To supervise project work at undergraduate and Masters levels and take forward the supervision and training of postgraduate research students.10. Take on administrative or management roles within the subject/School as assigned by the Head of School.11. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.12. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.13. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.For appointment at grade 8:14 Demonstrate enhanced leadership, academic responsibility and strategic management, particularly through internationally leading research, outputs and funding.For appointment at grade 9:15 In addition, demonstrate a distinctive contribution to the academic community through a leading role nationally and internationally, e.g., shaping research agendas, advising review panels and funders.Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and ExperienceKnowledge/QualificationsEssential:A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD] or equivalent in related discipline with a growing reputation for scholarship within the subject area.A2 A developing national / international reputation, evidenced by esteem indicators, in a field that matches or enhances existing activities within the area of Physical ChemistryFor appointment at Grade 9:A3 An extensive and established reputation in research and/or teaching within the subject area to develop new knowledge and understanding within the field.SkillsEssential:C1 Ability, drive and influence to develop an international research profile.C2 Research creativity and strong cross discipline collaborative ability as appropriate.C3 Excellent communication skills, with ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely.C4 Excellent interpersonal skills and a collegiate approach.C5 Appropriate workload/time/project/budget/people management skills.C6 Extensive IT and data analysis/interpretation skills.C7 Good team leadership skills including demonstrable supervisory skillsC8 A strong commitment to high quality, research led, student orientated teaching and proven ability to engage students to inspire learning, and to provide pastoral care to students.For appointment at Grade 8/9:C9 Excellent leadership skills, able to develop early career academic colleagues and manage a research team.C10 Excellent influencing and collaboration skills to facilitate shaping the research agenda of the academic community and funders.C11 Exceptional commitment to high quality teaching, enthusing students and inspiring learning.ExperienceEssential:E1 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience including postdoctoral experience, appropriate to an early career researcher.E2 Evidence of an emerging track record of presentations and publications.E3 Experience in undertaking independent research and contributing to successful funding applications.E4 Excellent track record of development and delivery of teaching, tutoring or demonstrating at undergraduate or postgraduate level.For appointment to higher grades the following criterial should also be met.For appointment at Grade 8:E5 Strong track record of undertaking research, publishing in high impact journals at national and international level, and in attracting external research funding.E6 Excellent track record of contribution to academic and administration activities in a research led institution.For appointment at Grade 9:E7 Evidence the above criteria to a higher degree, particularly in generation of research, outputs, funding, supervision, and knowledge exchange/impact.Job FeaturesThe University of Glasgow, established in 1451, is a member of the UK’s Russell Group of leading universities.
