The School leads research in Autonomous Systems & Connectivity; Biomedical Engineering; Electronics & Nanoscale Engineering; Infrastructure & Environment; and Systems, Power & Energy. We have 172 academics and 176 post-doctoral researchers supported by 62 technicians and 33 professional services staff. We also have more than 500 research students working towards doctorates.Our School hosts fundamental research that is developed with the ambition to lead to industrial and academic impact. We expect the successful academic to complement and synergise with existing activities and to develop a network of collaborations locally (across the James Watt School of Engineering and the University) as well as to liaise with industry to translate their research to the highest impact.We are seeking to appoint an ambitious academic to join the School in the broad area of Space Technology, working within the Space and Exploration Technology (SET) Group. Candidates are sought from all fields spanning space technology and satellite applications; example research areas include but are not limited to access to space and propulsion, in-orbit space and satellite technologies, entry descent and landing, surface exploration technologies and underpinning work on orbital dynamics and mission design.The SET group is pursuing frontier research on space technologies with multiple research programmes supported by external funders such as ESA, UKSA, ERC, RAEng and DASA. The Integrated Space and Exploration Technology Laboratory (I-SET) hosts a range of facilities for technology development and demonstration including vacuum chambers, Helmholtz cages, air-bearing, 3D printers and a clean assembly area. The Space Propulsion and Deep Exploration Laboratory (SPADE) provides a working space for larger and dustier experiments, such as planetary exploration hardware, the MACHLAB facility provides a space for hot-fire rocket testing and the School’s ESA-funded Plume-Regolith Interaction Facility is equipped with one of the largest dirty-vacuum chambers in Europe for planetary surface simulation.
