About usUCL Earth Sciences is one of the oldest centres for earth and planetary sciences in the UK, situated in Bloomsbury in the heart of London and within minutes of the British Museum, the British Library and the Royal Institution. The Department is housed in the refurbished Kathleen Lonsdale Building (inaugurated by Sir David Attenborough in April 2018). The completion of this £28M project means that we have modern teaching laboratories now co-located with our research laboratories.The Department runs undergraduate degree programmes (BSc/MSci) in Geology, Earth Sciences, Geophysics, and Environmental Geosciences, as well as postgraduate taught Masters programmes (MSc) in Geophysical Hazards and Geoscience. Across these programmes we expect an intake of ~100 undergraduate and ~50 MSc students per year.About the roleWe are offering a full-time permanent academic post for a future research leader in the area of Experimental Earth Materials (rock physics, experimental petrology and/or mineral physics or other closely related discipline). The post is available at Lecturer (Grade 8) or Associate Professor (Grade 9) level, dependent on experience.UCL Earth Sciences has a strong tradition of research into the materials in the solid Earth. As such, our experimental laboratories host a broad range of equipment designed to study the physical properties of rocks and minerals. Our laboratories are supported by technical staff with decades of design, mechanical engineering, electrical and systems control knowledge allowing us to build and maintain unique capabilities that constantly push the frontiers. We expect the successful applicant to embed themselves within this community, aiming to use or extend our facilities to realise their own ambitious research programme.The research focus of the appointed academic could fall anywhere within the fields of rock physics, experimental petrology or mineral physics provided it complements and extends existing capabilities. The appointed person will seek to build links within the experimental lab group, with other members of the Department, and/or with those throughout UCL more widely.About youThe successful candidate will have extensive knowledge and expertise in any area of experimental earth materials (rock physics, experimental petrology and/or mineral physics or other closely related discipline) evidenced by a strong publication record in leading international research journals.An ambitious experimental research vision that supports and enhances the experimental labs in UCL Earth Sciences and evidence of obtaining external funding as PI to pursue research activities is essential.For consideration at Associate Professor level candidates will have evidence of sustained research funding to support an independent research team from external sources as evidenced by the holding of research grants as principal investigator and
