Org. Setting and Reporting
The position is located in the Office of the Legal Counsel, Office of Legal Affairs. The incumbent will report to the Principal Legal Officer.
Responsibilities
Under the overall supervision of the Principal Legal Officer, the Legal Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: • Research and compile materials for use in the preparation of opinions and for inclusion in studies and reports. • Handle, or refer to the appropriate officer as appropriate, a variety of verbal and written inquiries from internal and external parties, including providing information on processes and procedures related to specific activities of the office, etc. • Under supervision, may review, verify and process documents ensuring conformity to relevant guidelines and requirements, extract key data and update database, monitor requisite follow-up actions, approvals, etc. • Under supervision, may edit and conduct final check for accuracy of a variety of documentation, instruments, publications and related correspondence. • Service various committees, hearings and other meetings; select and compile relevant background materials; assist in the preparation of relevant documents; attend meetings and draft minutes/notes; monitor follow-up actions, etc. • Assist in the preparation of documents for electronic storage, access and circulation/publication, including document scanning and conversion, review of content and extraction of key data and text excerpts for categorization and indexing purposes, etc. • Create, as necessary, maintain and update internal databases. • Provide general office support services; draft, edit, proofread and finalize for signature and/or process a variety of correspondence and other communications. • Set up and maintain reference files/records (electronic and paper). • Schedule appointments/meetings, monitor deadlines, etc. • Coordinate administrative services to include preparing and monitoring requests, liaising with relevant units, and maintaining related statistics for reporting purposes as required. • Perform other ad hoc duties as assigned.

High school diploma or equivalent. Paralegal education is desirable.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of professional experience in paralegal work, conference servicing, general office support or a related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience are reduced to three years for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Professional experience in paralegal work or legal research is desirable. Professional experience working in an international organization, a national government or an international corporation is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
