With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world’s most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.Role description:Arcadis is looking to hire a Legal Director – A&U to provide business-focused Legal, Compliance & Privacy (‘LCP’) support to the Architecture & Urbanism (A&U) division aligned with the divisional strategic objectives. The Legal Director, A&U role includes certain responsibilities within Compliance and PrivacyLocation: CanadaReporting Lines: Legal Director, A&U reports directly to the General Counsel North America with a dotted reporting line into the BA Director A&U and the GBA Legal Director, Places.Direct Reports: The Legal Director A&U has the following number of direct reports: currently three attorneys and two paralegal support staff. As the A&U division works across the globe, this role will also be expected to build a collaborative network of stakeholders in other countries in which A&U operates. In particular, this role will closely collaborate with LCP teams, main focus areas being in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and with the Country Compliance Officers as well as the LCP Centres of Expertise (CoEs).Role accountabilities:Individual Accountabilities:Act as a business partner to support the A&U leadership team in decision making

  • Act as LCP Business Partner to the A&U leadership team – acting as an analytical and strategic thought partner for A&U leadership and being timely involved on key decisions and topics that are related to long-term strategic decisions.
  • Establish influential relationships and build knowledge of the A&U -specific priorities and challenges in order to support the strategic priorities of A&U within GBA Places and effective decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain strong project-related and commercial understanding, actively participate in the strategic pursuits process, and support all LCP-relevant initiatives and programs.
  • Work with key stakeholders on claims management, dispute resolution and settlement negotiations.

Add value through leveraging global expertise

  • Proactively provide insights and develop a global view on A&U -specific LCP risks and topics drawing LCP expertise from all relevant A&U country teams and in close collaboration with the LCP CoEs.
  • Drive lessons learned back into the business.
  • Leverage LCP knowledge and best practice across all A&U countries and within GBA Places

Interact with the global LCP team

  • Implement into A&U and ensure appropriate application of global policies and processes.
  • Promote standardization and automation and avoid customization (save for where needed for local legal requirements).
  • Ensure alignment with the GBA Legal Director Places and the wider LCP team and provide relevant information, data and reporting appropriate to the A&U to the Global General Counsel and, for Compliance and Privacy, to the Global Compliance Officer and Global Privacy Officer.

Accountability, Culture & Compliance

  • Role model and engage on core values and behaviors (including the AGBP and the Six Privacy Rules).
  • Leverage best practices across A&U countries and all Global Businesses
  • Safeguard A&U compliance with relevant laws and regulations, increase awareness, and provide or signpost additional training where needed.

Travel: This role may require travel internationally to meet with key stakeholders and/or attend meetings/workshops appropriate to the role. Any travel will be in line with sustainability targets and global travel guidance.Key Shared Accountabilities:

  • Together with the A&U Management Team, enable the opportunities and identify and manage LCP risks in order to support the growth and strategic ambitions of the A&U and the wider GBA Places business.
  • Establish trusted and influential relationships with senior leaders on strategic priorities
  • Provide front-line advisory and drive initiatives with a strategic LCP or business impact through A&U.

Decision Rights:Owns: A&U LCP prioritiesInfluences: A&U initiatives and decision makingVetoes: Area of non-complianceQualifications & Experience:The candidate should have a relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of progressive senior leadership experience in a legal capacity and be qualified to practice law. The candidate should have broad experience in complex contracts and disputes.Further, the candidate should have:

  • Proven experience as a strong business partner with an excellent understanding of the business and the internal client’s needs combined with financial acumen and operations knowledge.
  • A strong grasp of all major components of the LCP function (such as relevant governance and pursuit processes) and an ability and desire to drive operational excellence through the global LCP function, including motivating and developing remote networks and teams.
  • Excellent stakeholder management with the ability to work closely with senior leaders across the business;
  • High-level communication skills and expertise in consulting, coaching, and presenting in a clear and concise manner; and
  • Experience across the broad range of issues faced within a global division, including employee and labor issues.

Preferred Experience:

  • Past background in architectural or designing firms is strongly preferred.

The salary range for this position is CAD 200,000 – 250,000.
