Stewardship: We responsibly manage the resources entrusted to us.This position is responsible for delivering community based Adult Literacy Programming focusing on increasing the participant’s literacy and life skills.

  • Full-time, 35 hours per week
  • Monday to Friday – 8:00 am to 3:00 pm

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Planning and Instruction:

  • Creates a professional, helpful and non-threatening learning environment to those who seek to learn.
  • Develops and implements literacy curriculum which reflects both the Provincial Stages Outcomes and the individual student’s interests and literacy needs.
  • Creates and monitors an Education Action Plan with each student, to ensure that they have clearly stated academic and personal goals during their participation in program.
  • Assists students in utilizing the computer as part of their learning plan.
  • Plans and supervises educational field trips to broaden the student’s learning environment.
  • Plans and coordinates life skills lessons and community projects as appropriate.
  • Fosters co-operative social interaction with students through group dynamics.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director/Corps Officer.

Administrative:

  • Performs on-going evaluation of each student’s academic participation in the program. Completes monthly written evaluations on each student to ensure that their educational action plan continues to be relevant, realistic and achievable.
  • Performs daily record keeping of attendance, updating written case notes as required and holding students accountable for their attendance. This may also require implementing progressive discipline as outlined in the program policies and procedures.
  • Assists in recruiting, assessing, scheduling and supervising volunteer tutors as available.
  • Attends monthly staff meetings with Weetamah Staff.
  • Attends PEAC coaching sessions and annual performance review meeting with the Executive Director/Corps Officer.
  • Attends other meetings as requested by the Executive Director/Corps Officer.
  • Attends mandatory training as scheduled.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of high school diploma is required.
  • Completion of two (2) years of Community College.
  • Possessing a current Manitoba Teachers Certificate is an asset.
  • Completion of Manitoba Adult Literacy Programming Instructor training is an asset.
  • Satisfactory Police Information Check (PIC) with Vulnerable Sector Search

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience as a Literacy Instructor.
  • An alternate combination of education and experience may be considered.

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Ability to multitask, be organized and be flexible to change tasks without prior notice.
  • Ability and willingness to respect, promote, and support the mission, vision, and values of TSA and develop an understanding of the purpose of the Salvation Army in Canada and its implication as related to position responsibilities.
  • Ablility to motivate and encourage students from a marginal population as well as demonstrate patience.
  • Strong ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Microsoft office including, Excel, Word, Windows office, Outlook.
  • Ability to be adaptable and calm in stressful situations.
  • Ability to take initiative, be reliable and operate in an environment of accountability with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrates experience with Microsoft Office, internet, and keyboarding.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of the programs, its participants, records, and activities, as required.
