Applications are invited for a committed and enthusiastic Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist to join the South West London specialist Cardiothoracic Medical and Surgical Service based at St George’s University Hospital.The post holder will carry out their duties as a full-time Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia. The main clinical duties will be in Cardiothoracic Theatres and Cardiac Catheter Labs. The role will also offer the opportunity to deliver Anaesthetic sessions in a wider teaching hospital environment and to maintain skills outside Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia.Main duties of the jobThe main clinical duties will be in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and cardiac catheter labs. The role will also offer the opportunity to deliver anaesthetic sessions in a wider teaching hospital environment and to maintain skills outside cardiothoracic anaesthesia.Cardiac theatre days start at 07:30am until 19:30 (3.17PA). Thoracic theatre days start at 07:30 am and run until 19:00 (3.0 PA). All other day sessions start at 08:00 until 18:00 10 hours which equates to 2.5PA. Half day sessions are 5 hours which equates to 1.25PA. The flexi cardiac sessions, work on a rotation with all cardiac anaesthetist through cardiac, thoracic and cath lab or general lists. The post holder is expected to work these sessions on a flexible annualized basisThe consultant on-call rota is a 1 in 7 with prospective cover and is for cardiothoracic anaesthesia only. The post holder is expected to liaise with their Consultant colleagues in providing internal cover for annual, study and professional leave, sick leave and this may require some flexibility in the post holder’s hours.The post holder is expected to be flexible both in terms of session and day of the week. The above job plan may be subject to change depending upon the needs of the serviceThe consultant will be required to undertake the clinical, educational and management duties specified below. The demands of the anaesthetic department mean that close and on-going collaboration with consultant colleagues is required.About usWith over 9000 staff, St George’s Hospital is the largest healthcare provider in Southwest London. Following the pandemic, the Trust is actively rebuilding Cardiac Surgical services in collaboration with the South London Cardiac Surgery Network. With approximately 950 cases projected in the next 12 months, the Cardiothoracic surgery service is committed to further developing the existing minimally invasive surgery programme in 2024. Qualifications and Training
Essential

  • Full registration (or within 3 months of) and license to practice with GMC or eligible if currently working overseas in Cardiac Anaesthesia
  • MBBS and FRCA or equivalent
  • Experience of working in a cardio-thoracic centre/Fellowship
  • Competent in intraoperative TOE as applied to cardiac surgery. TOE accreditation achieved or accreditation in progress
  • Previous experience of working in NHS
  • Competent in thoracic anaesthesia and regional blocks applicable to the speciality

Experience
Essential

  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
  • Wide experience and a high level of competence in a broad range of anaesthetic procedures and techniques
  • Wide experience and active pursuit of anaesthetic sub-specialty work in cardiothoracic anaesthesia
  • Undertaken clinical or non-clinical service improvement initiatives including audit
  • Implementing change and monitoring compliance
  • An understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance
  • Understanding and involvement in Risk Management
  • Incident reporting and M& M review

Desirable

  • Higher Degree (MD/PHD/Diploma relevant to job)
  • Academic distinction or prizes
  • Further postgraduate qualifications
