Applications are invited for locum Neuro consultant posts with an interest in Neuro. The post holders will join the Neuro on-call rota.The post holders will have sessions in neurosurgery, neuroradiology and general anaesthesia. The posts additionally include annualised sessions which can be used to maintain flexibility and skill level across multiple specialty lists. Annualised sessions are performed when needed by the department and chosen by the individual.Main duties of the jobThe vacancy is a full time post of 10 PAs, with 9 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) and 1 for SPA in support of personal CPD, preparation for GMC appraisal, additional responsibilities of the post holder and revalidation with an opportunity to increase as interests develop.The job plan template is based on an alternating working pattern, weeks AC and weeks BD. Some operating lists are three session lists, for continuity of care and theatre efficiency.Session times (inclusive of CRA (clinical related activity time)AM – 08:00-13:00 (5 hours – 1.25PA)PM – 13:00-18:00 (5 hours – 1.25PA)EVE – 17:00 – 21:00 (4 hours – 1PA)All inpatient day sessions start at 08:00 and run until 18:00 10 hours which equates to 2.5PAs. Half day sessions are 5 hours which equates to 1.25PAs. Three session lists equate to 3.5PA’s.The consultant job plan includes ‘annualised sessions’ which can be worked flexibly to meet the needs of the individual and the department. Each annualised session is equivalent to the PA value of the session worked. This flexibility allows individuals to organise working patterns to support a better work life balance, whilst also ensuring we have cover within the department. It is expected that the post-holder will contribute to a proportion of annualised sessions within the field of neuroanaesthesia. The remaining annualised sessions will be within the general anaesthesia subspecialties with in the skill mix of the individual anaesthetist.About usOur main site, St George’s Hospital in Tooting – one of the country’s principal teaching hospitals – is shared with St George’s, University of London, which trains medical students and carries out advanced medical research. A large number of services, such as cardiothoracic medicine and surgery, neurosciences and renal transplantation, also cover significant populations from Surrey and Sussex, totalling around 3.5 million people.A number of our services are members of established clinical networks which bring together doctors, nurses and other clinicians from a range of healthcare providers working to improve the quality of services for patients. Qualifications and Training
Essential

  • Holder of Certificate of completion of training (CCT) training in Anaesthesia or equivalent, within six months of interview.
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), or eligible for registration within six months of interview.

Desirable

  • MSc, PhD or similar
  • Other resuscitation certifications

Experience
Essential

  • Evidence of broad experience in all aspects of general anaesthesia and able to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of the patients.
  • Experience of NHS working practices and systems (minimum one year working for the NHS)
  • At least 6 months Advanced Training or equivalent, or Fellowship in Neuro Anaesthesia

Desirable

  • Relevant publications in peer reviewed literature
  • Post graduate research

Skills
Essential

  • Logbook evidence of all cases within last 2 years
  • Logbook evidence within neuro anaesthesia
  • Delivering teaching to Anaesthetic Consultants and Trainees

Desirable

  • Post-graduate teaching qualification or equivalent
  • Teaching in the Simulator setting
  • Evidence of Teaching at National Level / Regional Level
  • Awards or prizes for presentations delivered
  • Post-graduate qualification in leadership and management
  • Lead role in developing a service

Audit, Quality Improvement Projects (QIP) and service improvement
Essential

  • Participation in Audits and/or QIPs within Neuro Anaesthesia
  • Knowledge and understanding of ACSA (Anaesthetic Clinical Service Accreditation)

Desirable

  • Experience in leading clinical audits, implementing change and monitoring compliance
  • Adapting National Guidelines to departmental level

Team working
Essential

  • Ability to work productively in multidisciplinary teams both as team leader and as team member

Desirable

  • Team working within the non-clinical setting
