This is a 10 PA locum appointment for Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist. This post will be available from as soon as possible for a period of six months.The post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the anaesthetic team at the Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s University Hospital Leeds.The post will be based at The Leeds General Infirmary.The successful applicant should hold accreditation in FRCA in the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.Applicants should have established skills in cardiothoracic anaesthesia. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share. It is desirable that the candidates have experience in the conduct of clinical trials.The appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead in the following:Mortality and morbidity meetingsClinical audit programmesDevelopment and application of agreed clinical guidelinesIn the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.The post-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinical area basis.The appointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in the Local Education and Training BoardAbout usThis is a full time locum post with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and will be based at the Leeds General Infirmary. The post-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinical area basis.The post-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.The appointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in the Local Education and Training Board.JOB PLAN AND WORKING ARRANGEMENTSThe job plan review will take place annually, normally with the Clinical Director or Lead Clinician for Anaesthesia. The annual job plan review may result in a revised job plan. There may be an interim review of the job plan where duties, responsibilities, accountability arrangements or objectives have changed or need to change significantly within the area. Experience
Essential

• Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in anaesthesia including Cardiac anaesthesia.
• Specifically, he/she must demonstrate higher training in Cardiac anaesthesia
• Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances
• Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research
• Should have completed a recognised training programme in anaesthesia
• Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors
• Experience of participation in regular clinical audit
• Understanding of current issues in the NHS
• Well organised and skilled in good time management.
• Effective interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team
• Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
• Eligibility to work in the UK
• Is up to date and fit to practise safely
• All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written/spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients/colleagues demonstrated by one of the following OR
• Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English OR
• Achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application
• in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (An overall minimum score of 7.5) OR
• Achieved minimum Grade B across all 4 categories the Occupational English Test (OET) in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing
• Medically fit to fulfil ALL aspects of the post, and be able to respond quickly to emergencies, as necessary. Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice)

Desirable

• Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff
• Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group
• Teaching Workshops
• Attendance at recognised management course

Qualifications
Essential

• MB BS (or equivalent)
• FRCA or equivalent qualification

Desirable

• Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.
