Applicants are invited to apply for a Locum Consultant in Cardiology with specialist interest in Echocardiography. This is a fixed term post for an initial 6 months and the post-holder will be integral to the service delivery of the echo service at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital – Harefield Hospital site.This individual should be capable of performing outpatient valve clinics independently, performing inpatient ward rounds for valve and endocarditis patients and be trained and accredited in basic and complex echocardiography (including stress echo, TOE and intraprocedural structural echo). In addition there will be an aspect of teaching, both qualified clinical staff and students from our partner Brunel Medical School. There is no on call commitment.Main duties of the jobThis is a full-time post (10 PAs), and the appointee will work closely with the team of intervention consultants, specialist nurses, clinical scientists and physiologists to deliver clinical services on site at Harefield Hospital, Uxbridge. Harefield Hospital (HH) is a regional centre for cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, and an international centre for adult heart and heart-lung transplantation. It is one of a small number of UK cardiac centres assisting in development of implantable mechanical ventricular assist devices in the management of end-stage heart failure. It also provides a primary intervention service for acute coronary syndromes to selected Trusts and the London Ambulance Service, in outer West London and the Home Counties.   • There is an aspect of clinical education involving both qualitifed Harefield Hospital clinical staff (eg mitral MDT, ward staff) and medical students from our partner Brunel Medical School.
  • All consultants are expected to contribute to the management and development of their clinical service. To ensure a robust service is provided.

Person SpecificationProfessional QualificationsEssential

  • Eligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practise
  • On GMC Specialist Register or within six months of attaining CCT.
  • BSE Accreditation in Transthoracic Echo (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • BSE Accreditation in Stress Echo +/- TOE +/- Congenital Heart Disease or similar
  • Higher degree relevant to heart valve disease (MD/PhD)

Clinical ExperienceEssential

  • Comprehensive experience in Clinical Cardiology
  • Experience of transthoracic echo in elective and acute patients
  • Experience of advanced diagnostic echo techniques: stress echo, TOE etc
  • Experience of TOE to guide a range of cardiac structural interventions

Desirable

  • Teaching experience
  • Research experience with publication record etc

Clinical SkillsEssential

  • Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Sound knowledge of clinical cardiology and Echocardiography
  • Sound knowledge of radiation protection matters in Cardiology

  • Evidence of understanding of the role of clinical management
  • Management and IT skills required
  • Understanding of principles of audit
