We are delighted to advertise 2 Locum Consultant posts in Anaesthesia at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust. These posts are replacement posts. The posts will initially be for a period of 12 months with a possibility of extension.. Consultant anaesthetist will be responsible for delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care to the service users in accordance with the trusts values, procedures, and operating policies.The posts are ideally suited for consultants with a specialist interest in ‘Obstetric Anaesthesia’ or ‘Generalists’ with subspecialist interests in anaesthesia for major surgery, perioperative medicine, or Paediatric anaesthesia. Obstetric posts consist of regular sessions on labour ward and maternity theatres. Other sessions are negotiable. Options include sessions in Gynae-oncology, ENT, Colo-rectal, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Pre-assessment, and Peri-operative Anaesthesia.There are ample opportunities to develop personal interest in amongst other things like management, governance, peri-operative medicine, service development and education and training. Our new hospital is likely to open within the next year and hence the post holders must understand the ongoing changes within the trust service and be prepared to contribute actively to the process. New ideas and experience in this area will be highly welcomedClosing date: 25th May 24Interview date: 31st May 24Main duties of the jobThe successful applicant will join the current department of 49 existing highly motivated and respected anaesthetic consultants, including 13 who currently provide obstetric cover, supported by a team of 18 experienced speciality doctors and trainees from both Birmingham and Stoke School of Anaesthesia. All consultants at the Trust work cross-site at both City and Sandwell Hospitals, with theatre services at both hospitals. Maternity services are based exclusively at the city site. The appointee will be expected to work flexibly at both locations, depending on the needs of the service and the appointee’s sub-specialty interests. We currently provide an on-call cover for each site on a 1 in 14 frequency. Initially posts are for 10PAs with additional sessions available if mutually agreeable. Requirements for training are described in the Person Specification. From the non-clinical perspective, strengths in the fields of either medical education and simulation training or service development and risk management would complement the department well. The department is looking for enthusiastic candidates who will bring new skills, knowledge, and techniques to the department. Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC registration & licence to practice.
- Eligible to work in the UK.
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetist (FRCA) or equivalent.
- Advanced Training in Obstetric Anaesthesia (or evidence of equivalent experience) – Obs Post as specified in the RCoA’s 2010 CCT in Anaesthetics (Annex E).
- Entry on the Specialist Register in Anaesthesia, (or entry expected within 6 months from the date of interview).
Desirable

Clinical Experience:
Essential
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients and offer expert clinical opinion in the specialty
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Anaesthesia
- Skills and experience in Anaesthesia appropriate for a consultant in District general hospital including Paediatric resuscitation.
- Demonstrates a clear, logical approach to clinical problems and an appropriate level of clinical knowledge
- Able to prioritise clinical need.
- Demonstrates awareness of breadth of clinical issues
Desirable
- Advances training in Anaesthesia for Major Surgery.
- Experience in Peri-operative medicine
- Experience in Enhanced recovery Methodology.
- Advanced Training in Airway management
- Advanced training in Regional Anaesthesia
- Experience in additional patient management skills like CPET, Variety COP monitoring.
