This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Surgeon, with a special interest in Pancreatic Surgery. The post will be available immediately for a period of 6 months.The post will be based at St James University Hospital. You will be joining a team of 5 surgeons who currently provide the full range of Pancreatic Services both benign and malignant.The successful candidate will have an on-call commitment of 1 in 10 shared with the other Pancreatic and Upper GI surgeons.Applicants should have established skills and competencies in Pancreatic and General Surgery. A strong academic record with evidence of publications and successful grant applications is essential. Excellent communication and team working skills and a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.Main duties of the job2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POSTTo deliver care to patients with pancreatic conditions within Leeds and the surrounding areas.Out-patient clinicsSupervision of patientsCare of acute patients on a 1 in 10 basisContribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetingsTo link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the West Yorkshire region.To work with colleagues in General Surgery to deliver acute on call (currently 1 in 10) This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.To lead academic clinical and basic science projects within our research group. To obtain funding for academic projects. Job responsibilitiesThis post is a locum post for a period of a maximum of 6 months.BACKGROUNDThis is a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Surgeon, with special interests in Pancreatic Surgery,This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Pancreas Team.The post will be based at St James University Hospital. You will be joining a team of 5 Pancreatic consultants who currently provide the full range of Pancreatic and general surgical services both benign and malignant.REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSTGeneral Training and QualificationsThe appointee must hold accreditation in General Surgery in the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent and have completed higher specialist training or equivalent if currently in a training programme within the UK.Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.Applicants must provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant Royal College at the time of application, in order for their application to be progressed further.ExperienceThe appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of general surgery and appropriate experience in general surgery and in particular pancreatic surgery.Person specificationSee person specification document.Clinical AuditThe appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead in the following:Mortality and morbidity meetingsClinical audit programmesDevelopment and application of agreed clinical guidelines.This is to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity. It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meetings and that such attendance would be recorded in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy.In the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.TEACHINGThe Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and all Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.The post-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinical area basis.The post-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.The appointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in Pancreatic and General Surgery in the Local Education and Training Board.JOB PLAN AND WORKING ARRANGEMENTSThe job plan review will take place annually, normally with the Clinical Director or Lead Clinician for Pancreatic Surgery. The annual job plan review may result in a revised job plan. There may be an interim review of the job plan where duties, responsibilities, accountability arrangements or objectives have changed or need to change significantly within the area.Proposed Job PlanThe post consists of 10 PAs with PAs of direct clinical care DCC and PAs of supporting professional activity SPA.Please note that this post has the opportunity to apply for funding for research PAs. Qualifications
Essential

  • FRCS or equivalent qualification
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
  • Eligibility to work within the UK.

Desirable

  • Relevant Higher degree MD PhD

  • Applicants must be able to medically fulfil ALL aspects of the post and be able to respond quickly to emergencies.

Experience

  • Be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in General Surgery
  • Be able to demonstrate higher surgical training in Pancreatic Surgery.
  • Must be able to evidence continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and post graduate doctors
  • Experience participating in regular clinical audit.
  • Strong academic record with evidence of publications and successful grant applications is essential

Desirable

  • Training on academic pathway. Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff in both clinical and basic science environment.
  • Have previous experience of supervising junior staff.
