We are looking for a new colleague to join the Thoracic Surgery team at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS trust as a consultant thoracic surgeon. Our department prides itself on a culture of teamwork, innovation, training and research. We are looking for a new colleague who will help to develop our clinical programmes including advanced minimal access surgery, surgical robotics, complex endobronchial treatment and trauma. We are currently seeing a significant increase in activity following the introduction of lung cancer screening in the South West. The post is primarily based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. Outreach clinics are a mixture of virtual and face to face sessions in hospitals including Cheltenham, Taunton and Bath. The Thoracic Surgery team consists of 5 consultant surgeons, supported by a team of senior clinical fellows and cardiothoracic trainees together with dedicated thoracic nurse specialists We anticipate that the successful candidate will contribute to the academic, research and teaching work of the department.Main duties of the jobThe successful applicant will be expected to undertake the full range of pulmonary and mediastinal surgery at established levels of modern practice in line with both contemporary national guidelines and local policy. The post holder will be expected to support lung cancer and other MDTs throughout the region as laid out in their job plan. They will work with colleagues to provide the urgent and emergency thoracic surgical service to our referring hospitals, including to the adult and paediatric major trauma centres. All consultants undertake clinics and MDTs at both UHBW and at our regional referring hospitals. Clinics are a mix of face-to-face and virtual format. Clinical Governance and Audit
Essential

  • Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation

Desirable

  • Broad range of IT skills

Qualifications & Training
Essential

  • Full and specialist registration in either AIM or GIM with the General Medical Council (GMC) or
  • Eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview or
  • Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview

Desirable

  • Higher academic qualification e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent

Experience
Essential

  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in thoracic surgery
  • Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
  • Experience in VATS major lung resections

Desirable

  • Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust’s service strategy
  • Experience at consultant level
  • Experience with surgical robotics

Clinical Knowledge and Skills
Essential

  • Up to date knowledge and experience of thoracic surgery
  • Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to thoracic surgery

Desirable

  • Evidence of advance subspecialist knowledge relevant to the departments work, for example advanced VATS lung resections, surgical robotics or advanced endobronchial procedures.

Research
Essential

  • Knowledge of the principals involved in research
  • Evidence of involvement in research
  • Evidence of peer review research papers

Desirable

  • Ability to increase the academic profile of the department.
  • Experience of clinical trials involvement as a named collaborator or Principal Investigator

Teaching and Training
Essential

  • Experience of teaching medical students.
  • Experience of supervising trainees.
  • Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team

  • Formal teaching qualification
  • Training the trainer course completion or equivalent

  • Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it
