This is a fixed term 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Pathologist in Cellular Pathology to cover a vacant post predominantly in Head & Neck Pathology. This post will be available from 1st November 2024 for a period of 6 months. The post will provide a service which includes biopsy reporting, cytology reporting, and surgical specimen cut up and reporting.The post will be based at the Department of Cellular Pathology, Level 5 Bexley Wing and Chancellor Wing, St James’s Hospital, Leeds.Applicants should have established skills in Cellular Pathology reporting and cut up. Job responsibilitiesThis is a full time locum Consultant appointment in Cellular Pathology, expected to be predominantly in Head & Neck pathology. The post will be based at St. James’s University Hospital in the Department of Cellular Pathology which is based in Bexley Wing and Chancellor Wing.The objectives of the post are to deliver care to patients with pathology service provision including biopsy and cytology reporting, specimen cut up, excision (benign and oncology) reporting and MDT meeting support. You will be expected to work alongside trainees and Consultants in other specialist teams within the Department and to contribute to teaching, audit, research, and service developments as required.Dr Rebecca Millican-Slater is the current Clinical Service Lead for Cellular Pathology and is responsible to the Pathology CSU Leadership Team. Mrs Sarah Caton is the Service Manager for Cellular Pathology. The Clinical Service Lead is supported by dedicated leads for medical training, appraisal, clinical governance, audit and research. Lead roles have been strengthened and developed to move further towards a devolved management structure to give individual consultants opportunities for management experience.The Department digitally scans all of its histopathology slides which enables all Consultants to report digitally following successful validation.There is a full programme of MDT and clinico-pathological meetings done in well-equipped meeting rooms or virtually. Within the department, there are double-headed microscopes in dedicated rooms, multiheader microscopes and a Powerwall available for teaching. The department has facilities for photomicrography and macroscopic photography and assistance with these is provided by our departmental audio visual personnel.There are currently 41 consultants in 35 whole time equivalent posts and a significant number of Histopathology trainees based in the Department who you will be expected to participate in the training of.Person Specification

  • Aware of own limitations.
  • Track record of engaging in clinical governance: reporting errors, learning from errors.
  • Evidence of active participation in audit and quality improvement.

Experience
Essential

  • Participation and completion of a training programme in Cellular Pathology
  • Experience and competence in specimen dissection, microscopic reporting of histopathology and cytology specimens, and MDT meetings

Desirable

  • Dedicated time working within the field of Head & Neck diagnostic pathology

Qualifications
Essential

  • FRCPath or equivalent qualification
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable

  • Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD
