We are currently seeking a Locum consultant psychiatrist to join our busy division of Planned Care in Hertfordshire. The post itself will involve providing clinical leadership to the Community Mental Health Team covering patients living in Hertfordshire.The ACMHS (Adult Community Mental Health Services) core team unites specialist medical, nursing, social work, occupational therapy, psychology, support workers STAR workers and administrative staff within the service reporting to a single management structure. ACMHS also have other specialist staff such as psychological therapists, Arts therapists and vocational support staff.Each ACMHS has a team leader who reports to a Community Mental Health Service Manager who is responsible for the quality of the service provided. The Team Leader is responsible for the oversight of day-to-day delivery of services by the ACMHS team. Each team has Clinical Nurse Specialist and Senior Social Worker roles that are responsible for the line management and professional leadership of nursing and social work staff. Each ACMHS Quadrant has at least one Lead Consultant Psychiatrist.Clinical work such as outpatient clinics will take place at one of the clinic bases but may also take place in another Trust location or other community destinations such as at home, in prison or in police stations.Main duties of the jobThe post holder will provide medical expertise, clinical leadership and support to the multidisciplinary ACMHS team. This involves diagnostic assessments and treatment to patients with severe, complex, and high-risk psychiatric conditions.The post holder would be involved in the assessment of emergency work both in terms of new referrals and difficulties with the existing patient population.The post holder will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and promptly record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively.The post holder will have responsibility for providing a comprehensive range of services in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team to all patients being managed in the Team.To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed by consultant colleagues and the medical director and in accordance with the Trust’s personnel policies and procedures. Job description
Job responsibilitiesIt is envisaged that the post holder will work 10 programmed activities over 5 days. The timetable is indicative only. Following appointment there will be a meeting at no later than three months with the medical Lead to review and revise the job plan and objectives of the post holder. The overall split of the programmed activities is 7.5 to be devoted to direct clinical care and 2.5 to supporting professional activities (as per the Royal College of Psychiatrists recommendation).The post holder will actively participate in annual appraisal.The post holder will participate in the academic programme of the Trust and the team including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.The post holder will maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and to abide by professional codes of conduct.The post holder will participate annually in a job plan review with the Medical Lead and Clinical Director, in order to ensure that the post is developed to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernisation.** full overview of the role is in the JD**Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Section 12 approval (or eligibility for S12 approval)

Desirable

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • Relevant higher degree, e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications.

Eligibility
Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment

Desirable

  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.
  • Approved clinician approval.

Clinical skills, knowledge and experience
Essential

  • Experience of the full range of clinical responsibilities expected of a consultant in general adult psychiatry.
  • Ability to work well in Multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of close collaborative working with social care and other agencies.
  • Experience of working with service users who have complex needs within general adult psychiatry.
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others.

Desirable

  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.
  • Excellent degree of medical knowledge in relation to general adult psychiatry

Academic skills lifelong learning
Essential

  • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training.
  • Participation in continuous professional development.
  • Participation in audit, Quality Improvement, research and service evaluation.
  • Able to use and appraise clinical evidence.
  • Has actively participated in clinical audit
  • Holds a full valid driving license and access to a car (Unless you have a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995).

Desirable

  • Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post.
  • Reflected on purpose of CPD undertaken. Experienced in clinical research and / or service evaluation.
  • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications
  • Has led clinical audits leading to service change.
  • Experience of organising and overseeing psychotherapy training program for psychiatry trainees.
