About us The Department of Mathematics at UCL is an internationally renowned department within one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Since its beginning, mathematics at UCL has been enhanced by its many outstanding members of staff. Indeed, two of its students (and later staff) Professor Klaus Roth (1958) and Professor Alan Baker (1970) have gone on to win the Fields Medal. Another former member of staff Professor Tim Gowers won the Fields Medal in 1998 for work he did whilst at UCL.Since 2011 the department has grown considerably. There are approximately 81 academic members of whom 34 are full professors, and a number of Honorary members of staff, including Fellows of the Royal Society. The department also has approximately 31 Postdoctoral Research Fellows, around 102 PhD students and 38 MSc students. We also welcome a regular stream of distinguished visiting academics from home and abroad. The broad range of research interests is reflected in the large choice of courses available in the third and fourth years of the degree programmes, from spectral theory, groups and geometry to fluid mechanics and from mathematical ideas in biology to cosmology. Research funding in the department from EPSRC, ERC, Leverhulme Trust and the Wellcome Trust has grown significantly in recent years with an increase of 70% in total funding since 2011.About the role The post holder will need to be able to start before or on the 31st July 2024.Interviews are planned to be held, 31st May 2024.The London Taught Course Centre (LTCC) was formed to foster the training of doctoral research students in the Mathematical Sciences. Its courses cover the areas of Statistics, Applied and Pure Mathematics, with the goals of providing students with an overview of these areas and acquiring a working knowledge of classical results and recent developments in their broad research fields but outside the specialised domains of their research projects. There is a wide range of expertise among the staff of the institutions currently in the LTCC consortium: UCL, Queen Mary, Imperial College (Statistics), King’s College, LSE, City, Kent, Brunel, Royal Holloway, and The Open University. The role requires interaction with many people at all levels, a professional attitude, a willingness to help, and an ability to remain tactful and assertive, which are necessary to execute the role adequately. Building effective and positive working relationships is essential.Main Purpose of the jobThe LTCC Centre Administrator assists the Directors with the day-to-day running of the Centre, administers the budget, and ensures that all payments on the project are processed and correct and that the fund is wellspent. The Centre Administrator also arranges the course and exam timetables and administers all exams. The LTCC exams are administrated independently from UCL. The Centre Administrator has a crucial role in liaising with partner universities, including lecturers, graduate students, and staff of the Department of Mathematics, to ensure the smooth running of the Centre. The Administrator is also responsible for maintaining the Centre’s website, taking minutes of Centre meetings, and all general administrative duties.About you A successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above (Including Mathematics and English Language) or equivalent or having acquired relevant experience. They will have IT Training or proven attainment of such knowledge through experience of managing and maintaining databases/spreadsheets. The successful candidate will have experience of budgeting, raising invoices and purchase orders.The successful candidate will also have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work confidently and diplomatically with people at all levels, from prospective students to senior colleagues. They will also have a high level of literacy and excellent oral and written communication skills and able to organise student-facing events and to work with students, academics, and support staff to achieve agreed goals via these events. In addition, the successful candidate will have the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with all colleagues at different levels of the institution. Moreover, the successful candidate will have the ability to prioritise workload and manage competing deadlines successfully, asking for clarification and direction appropriately and a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. The successful candidate will also work independently and use own initiative with minimal supervision and guidance, being able to report upwards in a timely and effective manner. Furthermore, the successful candidate will respond positively to changing priorities in a busy environment and take a proactive approach and the ability to use web publishing software to produce documents for the web. The successful candidate will also have good numeracy skills with the ability to present and interpret statistics and the ability of organising and servicing committees including taking minutes.The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and self-motivated and commitment to delivering excellent service to students and colleagues. They will have a flexible approach to work and a willingness to accept new challenges and change. The successful candidate will also have a commitment to personal and professional development and a commitment to the principles of EDI.An outstanding candidate will be educated to A level standard, or equivalent, or having acquired equivalent experience.
