LUMS Leading Lights Mentor: supporting students to develop effective academic skills.This role is for Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) students who will be in Part II of their programme at the start of the 25/26 academic year.LUMS Leading Lights (LLL) mentors support incoming LUMS students to successfully transition to academic life. New students and LUMS Leading mentors are matched and meet at regular intervals throughout the academic year to work on developing effective study practices and academic skills. The mentor role involves organising and facilitating these small group study sessions, based upon a set of learning materials pre-prepared by the Learning Development (LD) team. Additionally, mentors have the opportunity to design and lead study skills workshops and drop-ins on open to the broader LUMS student population with support from the LUMS Undergraduate Learning Developer.Please direct any enquiries to Dr Gill Smith at .Pay Rate: £12.71 per hour plus £1.54 holiday payStart Date: 1st September 2025End Date: 1st July 2026Working Pattern: 1-2 Hours per weekJob DescriptionResponsibilities of this role include:

• Attending training on effective mentoring practice.
• Organising regular meetings with mentees around academic skills development.
• Keeping a record of mentee attendance.
• Attending LUMS Leading Lights social events twice per term.
• Helping to facilitate or co-teach Learning Development workshops.
• Supporting termly LUMS Leading Lights drop-ins.
• Getting involved in designing, developing and promoting wider Learning Development resources.
• Providing feedback on the scheme.

Person Specification

• Being a mentor/coach requires a high level of patience, kindness, and a supportive attitude.

• You will need to be friendly, approachable and inclusive and must have the ability to put others at ease.

• We would also like students to have a good understanding of what academic skills support is provided by the LUMS Learning Development and the ethos and values behind it.

• If you have an interest in delivering ‘academic skills’ workshops or providing ad-hoc drop-in support for students in visible areas of the management school, we would also like to hear from you.

• We are not necessarily looking for students with a high grade average but we will require a reference from a member of staff who can vouch that you would be suitable for the role and we will ask about your attendance.
