  • Sets, develops, and implements departmental goals, objectives, and operational requirements that align with the strategic and operational goals of the organization; evaluates current operations and creates necessary systems and procedures to guarantee the efficient and successful operation of the assigned site(s)’ utility plants, including mechanical systems, that produce and distribute hot water and/or steam.
  • Provides operational leadership, including maintenance supervision for the emergency generators.
  • Oversees the operations, maintenance, and repair of the assigned site(s) central steam and/or hot water heating production/distribution Utility Plant(s), including Mechanical Systems.
  • Creates and implements the site(s)’ yearly operating and capital budget; oversees spending, reports variances, and analyzes and takes corrective action when needed.
  • Oversees the hiring, coaching, and professional development of contract and assigned staff; establishes staff schedules, assigns tasks, and gives work direction to fulfill operational needs; performs performance reviews and coaching sessions; facilitates goal setting with the employee; and determines necessary training and educational requirements.
  • Determines terms of reference, negotiates, and oversees contractual arrangements for specialized maintenance, grounds, and renovation work as needed; procures and oversees the work of outside service providers, either directly or through subordinate supervisors.
  • Oversees assigned maintenance, remodeling, and/or construction projects; communicates with stakeholders and plans staff, consultants, and contractor activities to guarantee project specifications are fulfilled and facility impacts are kept to a minimum.
  • Ensures that buildings are maintained in accordance with
  • best practices for reducing carbon emissions, and energy consumption, achieving LEED certification, and adhering to other pertinent environmental regulations.

Qualifications

  • A degree in mechanical engineering or power engineering from a British Columbian or Interprovincial second-class certificate of competency, plus five to seven years of recent, progressive supervisory and management experience in a large, complex unionized environment.
  • Proven interpersonal skills and the capacity to use good management practices while hiring, training, and supervising employees.
  • Ability to create reports and suggestions for audiences spanning multiple disciplines and confer with internal organization members.
  • Proven track record in project management and the ability to use word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Adaptable and flexible to meet changing priorities and resource constraints.
  • Expertise and experience in the management of human resources, electrical and control systems, refrigeration, and air conditioning.
