We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, like protecting the environment, making sure our food is safe or helping find cures for cancer.How will you make an impact?As part of the site leadership team, as the Technical Lead, you will manage a technical team, responsible for providing chemistry and process design support to Chemical Manufacturing and Fill/Finish at LCD Loughborough. You will support New Product Introduction (NPI) of catalogue and Custom & Bulk (C&B) products, particularly as the C&B business realises its growth potential. Over the next 3 years, new Chemical Manufacturing Facilities are being built at the Loughborough Site and you will join us on the exciting journey of transitioning across to the new facility whilst maintaining output from the current Plants.What will you do?:

  • Manage a small diverse technical team (Chemist(s), Chemical Engineer, NPI Technologist)
  • Translate the site vision and strategy into a technical team roadmap with goals and an executable plan
  • To play a vital support role in EHS matters, and to take on responsibility as required
  • Evaluate the suitability of raw materials for Plant use (particularly through distillation processes) and provide processing methods where material fails first pass through the plant
  • Carry out lab based experiments to establish the suitability of raw materials for use in manufacture / packing
  • Investigate non-conformances and other issues, carrying out root cause analysis and put in place solutions
  • Assess methods and provide quotes for new products to the Sales Team
  • Research, develop and present case for new product lines
  • Review and update Chemical Manufacturing Batch Instructions and SOPs, with a focus on Process Safety
  • Support Sourcing and Procurement by providing advice on supplier specifications and test methods
  • Support Product Management with portfolio management, finish goods specifications and product applications
  • Support QC in interpretation of analysis, analytical techniques and analytical testing
  • Contribute to HAZOPs for new and existing equipment and processes
  • Complete and approve COSHH and risk assessments
  • Work in collaboration with multiple Departments to introduce new processes and products
  • Act as Chemical Specialist, reviewing basic and detailed design of the new Plant
  • Develop specialist knowledge in key areas such as fractional distillation
  • Carry out safety and quality GEMBA’s and other audits
  • Adopt and participate in Continuous improvement initiatives (Practical Process Improvement) to identify improvements and cost savings
  • Align with ISO 9001 Quality Standards and ISO 14001 Environmental Standards

How will you get here?Education

  • Chemistry degree (1st or 2:1)
  • PhD or MSc preferable

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years as a Development Chemist
  • Line Management experience
  • Demonstrable hands-on Chemistry practical skills
  • Knowledge of analytical techniques, particularly HPLC, LC-MS, UV
  • Experience of working on a COMAH site or in an ATEX environment is helpful

  • Demonstrates a self-motivated, proactive and enthusiastic approach
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, orally and through presentations
  • Ability to analyse complex issues to determine underlying root cause
  • Proficiency in regulatory requirements with capability to develop in depth knowledge of Safety Laws and Regulations
  • Understanding of basic chemical engineering concepts and general chemical principles
  • Must be willing to work in a hands-on capacity
  • Strong drive to develop your career and progress within the business
