The Center is seeking a Managing Editor who will oversee the editorial process of the Climate
Disaster & Development Journal (CDDJ), its peer-reviewed scientific journal. Working together
with the Editor-in-Chief and the Knowledge Resources Manager, the CDDJ Managing Editor will
contribute towards ensuring the publication of high-quality scientific research within the climate
and development discourse.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The CDDJ Managing Editor will primarily coordinate with authors, reviewers and editorial board
members, among others, to facilitate the peer review process, manage editorial workflow and
maintain the journal’s standards.
The following are the specific duties and responsibilities of the CDDJ Managing Editor:
- Editorial Management
- Oversee the submission and peer review process, ensuring timely and sufficient review of manuscripts
- Assign manuscripts to appropriate editors and reviewers based on their expertise
- Coordinate with authors, reviewer and editors to facilitate revisions and improvements in manuscripts
- Monitor and manage the peer-review process, ensuring timely responses and quality reviews
- Quality Control
- Ensure scientific accuracy, integrity and quality of published content
- Maintain journal consistency in style, tone and content according to to the journal’s guidelines
- Review final proofs and resolve any issues related to formatting, references, and clarity.
- Team Coordination
- Liaise with the editorial board, authors and reviewers to manage workflows efficiently
- Provide guidance and support to Editor-in-Chief
- Organize regular meetings with the editorial board and track journal performance metrics
- Publication Strategy
- Collaborate with the journal’s leadership to shape publication strategy, including identifying key themes and emerging areas of research
- Develop strategies to improve the journal’s visibility, impact factor and reach within the scientific community
- Stay informed about trends in scientific publishing and integrate new tools and best practices into editorial operations
- Administrative Duties
- Manage relationships with the journal’s publisher and ensure adherence to timelines
- Handle administrative tasks related to the editorial office, including managing deadlines, communications, and record-keeping
- Outreach & Promotion
- Work with the marketing and communications team to promote journal content, special issues, and call for papers
- Represent the journal at conferences, workshops, and industry events to attract high-quality submissions and build partnerships
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science with Majors in Communications and its various specializations,
notably Developmental Communications, Communications Research, Journalism, or
related fields. An advanced degree is an advantage. - At least three to five years of experience in:
- Technical and scientific writing an editing, preferably in an academic / scholarly
setting - Publishing in academic environment, as an author, editor or reviewer
- Technical and scientific writing an editing, preferably in an academic / scholarly
- Strong understanding of of the peer-review process and best practices in scholarly
communication - Experience working with online manuscript submissions systems an advantage
- Ability to work collaboratively with a team of researchers, editors and reviewers
- Familiarity with ethical guidelines in scientific research and publication
- Knowledge of Open Access publishing models and emerging trends in scholarly communication an advantage
- Knowledge of SEO and digital content marketing strategies for scholarly publications an
advantage
