Applications are invited for a Growth Scientist to provide specialist technical expertise and support to the MBE Growth Facility in the Department of Physics on the University of Cambridge’s West Cambridge Site.The Growth Facility’s primary focus is III-V arsenide-based materials across a wide range of applications including ultra high mobility two dimensional electron gases, epitaxial quantum dots for quantum light sources, and GaAs-on-2D materials growth. The two arsenide MBE machines are complemented by a twin-chamber MBE system for topological insulators (Bi-Sb-Te), Weyl semi-metals (MoTe2), ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Mn alloys, which together deliver material to support fundamental research, R&D and small-scale production.The successful candidate will have day-to-day responsibilities in the MBE laboratory, providing highly technical support to ensure the smooth running of the facility, and working closely with academic and industrial customers from within Cambridge and further afield across the range of MBE growth systems.Working as part of the Nanofab team, the role holder will be required to advise on highly technical design and process considerations, resolve job queries, and undertake growth and maintenance tasks within the laboratory. The role holder will also be required to help oversee and manage support and characterisation equipment associated with the growth facility.The successful candidate should have proven experience of wafer design and MBE or MOVPE growth of III-V materials. Experience of working in a semiconductor fabrication cleanroom and knowledge of semiconductor processing and nano-fabrication techniques is desirable. They should have a track record of designing and conducting small-scale research work to develop new device architectures with PhD level experience (or equivalent). In addition, they must possess excellent communication and organisational skills, to ensure high performance in a small team.The Department is moving to a new state-of-the-art cleanroom complex in 2024/25 within the Ray Dolby Centre.
