About the Role / School

The School of Engineering and Material Science (SEMS) is seeking to appoint a Mechanical Workshops Manager. SEMS is a large School with circa 80 academics and around 50 postdoctoral research staff. There are around 1500 undergraduate and taught postgraduate students and 180 PhD students on the London campus. These are supported by an administrative and technical staff of circa 45.  The role holder will lead on the provision of technical support and expertise for our workshop facilities in order to ensure a high level service is planned and provided to academics, researcher and students. They will be responsible for ensuring the workshop facilities are maintained to the highest standards and ensuring an excellent service is delivered to workshop users via line management of currently five technical staff. The workshop facilities are a core resource for multiple schools.  The workshop team supports undergraduate and postgraduate students on taught modules, as well as manufacturing highly specialised components for researchers and academics.  As well as the main workshop, the team also manage and support the SEMS makerspace and SEMS aeronautical laboratory.

About You

You should:

  • hold qualifications equitable to BTec/HNC/HND/City & Guilds in Mechanical Engineering or a recognized and certificated apprenticeship in Engineering followed by significant on the job training and experience.
  • have experience of managing the day-to-day operation of a workshop or experience of working in a workshop environment at a senior level. 
  • be highly skilled manufacturing technician in mechanical engineering.
  • have a proven track record of leading, motivating and managing technical staff and have a thorough working knowledge of workplace Health and Safety regulations and procedures and their practical implementation (e.g. Risk Assessments).

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time, permanent appointment, with an expected start date of September 2023. The starting salary will be Grade 6, in the range of £51,048 – £56,921 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
