Media CoordinatorPrimary Purpose: The Media Coordinator is responsible for providing communications support for University Communications. The primary goal of the position is to support the Unit’s goals and priorities with effective communications that builds, maintains and protects the University of Saskatchewan’s reputation regionally, nationally and internationally.Nature of Work: This position requires strong writing, editing, and communication skills, with an emphasis on news stories, press releases, and media relations. The ideal candidate will have experience in writing compelling news content, responding to media inquiries, and proactively pitching story ideas to media partners. A deep understanding of best practices for engaging with various audiences is essential. We are seeking someone who can manage multiple projects simultaneously, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and build effective relationships with media outlets and stakeholders. This role demands flexibility, the ability to adapt quickly, and a collaborative approach within a team setting. The position may include a combination of remote and on-campus work, with details to be determined upon hiring. Accuracy and attention to detail are crucial, as errors could have a significant impact on the university’s reputation. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
University Relations is responsible for institutional advancement programs (alumni and external relations, development, strategic communications), and as such is dedicated to supporting the related needs of all colleges, units and the university as a whole. Reporting Structure: The Media Coordinator reports to the Media Relations Specialist on the central university communication unit, while working with communicators from across campus. The incumbent is a member of the Offices of the Vice-President University Relations.Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
1. Researching, drafting, and editing news articles about university events, achievements, research, and community impact for various platforms, including web, print, and social media.
2. Crafting clear and compelling press releases on behalf of the university, highlighting important announcements, events, and initiatives, and distributing them to appropriate media outlets.
3. Responding to media inquiries, coordinating interviews, and facilitating access to university representatives, experts, or spokespersons for media coverage.
4. Tracking and analyzing media coverage of university-related stories, compiling media reports, and providing summaries of media engagement, coverage, and impact for internal stakeholders.
5. Providing communications support for various media relations, social media, internal communications initiatives, including communications planning, writing, web and social media content creation, etc.
6. Provide advice on communications, marketing and public relations; draft briefings, PowerPoint presentations and other documents.
7. Steward the USask brand and visual identity.
8. Assist with other communications projects as required.Education: An undergraduate university degree, preferably in communications, journalism, marketing or related field. Experience with photography or video would also be considered an asset. An equivalent level of education and experience may be considered.Experience: One to three years of directly related experience in related areas of communications and marketing. Knowledge of the University of Saskatchewan, the academic environment and/or advancement would be an asset.Skills:
– Demonstrated communications skills and experience applying them in a complex environment, working with multiple stakeholders
– Experience with photography or video would be an asset
– Understanding of digital communications platforms, including social media (best practices and content creation) and web/graphic-based storytelling
– Experience creating and implementing communications plans
– Experience with marketing and ad copy writing
– Excellent writing and editing abilities, careful attention to detail and proofreading skills
– Ability to conceptualize and create content for a variety of channels, including web, video, social media, media, print, etc.
– Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills including tact, diplomacy, professionalism and ethical behavior
– Ability to deliver projects on time and on budget
