Media Intern

Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting This Internship will be to support UN-Habitat’s office of the Executive Director. The internship is for a maximum period of six months. The internship is unpaid and full time. Interns work (5) days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the office which they are assigned. This internship will be in person and the selected intern will be sitting at the UN-Habitat OED.

  • The Office of the Executive Director (OED) is responsible for effectively implementing UN-Habitat’s mandate, policies, strategies, and strategic plans through the biennial work programs, strategic frameworks and budgets.
  • The office oversees the management of human and financial resources, and advocates for sustainable urban development approaches to be adopted by the Urban Agenda partners. Photographs and videos are powerful tools of communication, capable of transcending language barriers and conveying messages with unparalleled immediacy and impact. In the realm of global communication and advocacy, particularly within the framework of organizations like UN-Habitat, the significance of high-quality photography cannot be overstated. Images possess the unique ability to capture attention, evoke emotions, and tell stories that resonate deeply with audiences worldwide. Office of the Executive Director The first reporting officer will be Julius Mwelu followed by Runze Wang in the office of the Executive Director.
  • Responsibilities Under the guidance of the official photographer, the selected Digital Video Production Interns will be responsible for the following duties: The selected intern will support the Office of the Executive Director by recording video messages and taking photographs.
  • The intern will collaborate closely with the communication and design teams. Additionally, the intern will assist UN-Habitat branches and offices by providing communication guidelines and policies for editorial, publications, production, and events.
  • The intern will also work with other units in ERD to create website content for events and produce a calendar of events. Furthermore, they will assist with outreach for publication launches, as well as coordinate events and outreach activities.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher),
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent),
  • Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: The ideal candidate should have undergraduate training in journalism and international relations. Students in the School of Political Sciences and those studying development journalism and broadcast will be preferred. Additionally, skills in videography, photography, communication, database creation, and Microsoft Excel will be advantageous. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
