This position is located in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) duty station Kabul, Afghanistan. The Medical Officer reports to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Medical Officer, P-3 will be responsible for the following duties: Clinical Duties: •Undertakes day-to-day clinical duties, e.g. walk-in clinic, emergencies; •The incumbent provides medical support to staff of participating entities of the Joint Medical Services (JMS) and the Medical Emergency Team (MERT); •Provides administrative support to the contracted Forward Surgical Team and Aeromedical Evacuation Team; •Undertakes day-to-day occupational health duties: pre-placement and periodic medical examinations, prepares UN staff for traveling providing immunizations, malaria prophylaxis, travel kits, etc.; •Refers staff to outside specialists as necessary; •Follows-up with outside specialists; •Provides health education and health promotion programs; •Participates in addressing work environment and occupational health issues. Medico Administrative Duties: •Liaises with host-nation medical facilities; •Follows the United Nations established policies and procedures regarding medical clearances, sick leave and medical evacuations/repatriations; •Participates in drafting and implementation of business continuity and crises preparedness plans for the duty station/mission; •Serves as Officer in Charge for the Section during the absence of the CMO. Supervisory Administration: •Manages day-to-day mission medical support operations by ensuring availability of medical supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment; •Ensures appropriate training programs are implemented in order to maintain and develop medical capabilities (e.g. health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and UN Buddy First Aid Course. •Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patters and provides insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning everyone can discover, access, integrate and share the data they need. Formal training in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and, preferably in Basic Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support or equivalent emergency medical care. Education
Currently registered to practice medicine in own country or another UN member state is required. Doctorate in Medicine (MD) or equivalent in medicine is required. Residency in one of the medical specialties is required, preferably gynecology or general surgery. Qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of residency. Acute trauma care and life support certification within 12 months prior to deployment is desired.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible clinical experience in one of the areas of medicine is required. Experience of working in the UN or an International organization especially in conflict areas and/or adverse living conditions, managing Joint Medical Services is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
