MRes Speech & Language Sciences Studentship 2024/25

About the Project

The MRes is suitable for recent graduates, who wish to advance their research skills in the field as well as candidates, who wish to consider subsequent PhD studies.

This programme represents a unique opportunity for students to conduct a substantial research project in the area of Speech and Language Sciences undertaken over one year. Students will gain important research skills by taking at least one 20-credit research training class from the following, and 160 credits of independent research study:

  • C8939 – Quantitative Research Methods in Psychology
  • C8990 – Research Methods in Clinical Health Psychology

Our research focuses on all aspects of diagnosis and treatment of people with communication problems. We also have a strong interest in understanding typical characteristics of speech and language across the life span. Our department is equipped with state-of-the-art ultrasound tongue imaging technology for the study of speech sound disorders in children and sociophonetics.

Eligibility

Applicants must have a first-class or upper second-class UK undergraduate degree, or overseas equivalent, in speech and language pathology or a related subject such as linguistics, psychology, cognitive science.

If English is not your first language, we would require IELTS minimum overall band score of 6.5 (no individual test score below 5.5) Test is valid for 2 years, or equivalent.

The successful applicant must be able to commence study on 16 September 2024 (academic year 2024/25)

Please explore the supervisors’ areas of expertise in the first instance as you’ll need to identify your research supervisor before you make an online application, preferably as soon as possible.

When you’ve identified a potential supervisor, based on how well your research interests match theirs, drop them an email to introduce yourself. In the email, make sure you attach a draft of your research proposal around 1,000 words, along with a copy of your CV.

If your chosen supervisor is available to work with you, they’ll confirm this and nominate a potential second supervisor.

  • Degree transcripts & certificates
  • Proof of English language proficiency if English is not your first language
  • Provide full details of 2 references, of which at least one must be academic
  • Research Proposal in the region of 1,000 words in length, detailing the subject area and topic to be investigated

The selection panel will review applications after the closing date and the studentship will be awarded competitively shortly thereafter to the successful applicant.
