National Communication Specialist

The National Communication Specialist should possess expertise and capacity to coordinate, design, lay out, and develop communication and advocacy materials. A solid understanding of the country context and the most effective channels for the exchange of information and ideas with key partners and donors is required. The incumbent will ensure that all communication and advocacy products are of high technical quality, culturally relevant, and tailored to the needs of the local context and target audience. The s/he will lead the development and delivery of communications materials and activities for key UN observances, such as World Food Day.

Responsibilities:

In close collaboration with Office of Communications (OCC) branches and appropriate Communication focal points, the incumbent will:

  • •    Ensure all communication and information outputs align with FAO’s corporate communication policy, operational guidelines, and publishing standards.
  • •    Develop and update a comprehensive Communications Strategy and Action Plan for the FAO Representation, including communication targets, indicators, and budgets, in line with the Country Programming Framework (CPF) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) for Indonesia.
  • •    Assist in preparing project work plans that incorporate assessments of issues and trends to guide effective implementation of communication strategies within projects and programmes.
  • •    Advise stakeholders on all aspects of communication and visibility for FAO’s projects and programmes in Indonesia.
  • •    Support public communication activities by coordinating with programme teams to prepare talking points, arrange photo and video coverage, draft press releases, disseminate news through media contacts, and manage interviews or press conferences.
  • •    Identify and develop compelling feature stories for TV, print, and online media, showcasing good practices and beneficiary impacts from FAO’s Technical Cooperation work in the country.
  • •    Strengthen FAO’s media relations, public visibility, and partnerships with international and national development partners, institutions, donors, and government counterparts.
  • •    Build and maintain a comprehensive database of media stakeholders and partners.
  • •    Collect high-quality photographs from FAO’s projects and submit to OCC for inclusion in the corporate photo database.
  • •    Regularly update the FAO Representation’s website and social media channels with approved press releases, feature stories, project updates, and other relevant content, in coordination with the regional focal person at RAP and Information Resources in country office.
  • •    Identify communication training needs and develop/implement training programmes for FAO staff and consultants.
  • •    Lead the planning and implementation of communication campaigns for key UN observances, such as World Food Day.
  • •    Coordinate and prepare publications, including articles, leaflets, stories, social media posts, images, infographics, videos and other materials, in collaboration with technical teams.
  • •    Assist with FAO’s Publications Workflow System (PWS) for the preparation of published documents and guidelines as needed.
  • •    Contribute and participate in meetings and conferences, proposing communication-related agenda topics, identifying participants, preparing documents and presentations, and disseminating information on project/programme achievements.
  • •    Organize and lead media field missions, providing guidance to media personnel, government officials, and other stakeholders.
  • •    Accompany FAO Representatives to events and field trips as required.
  • •    Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • All communication materials will follow FAO clearance processes and comply with FAO standards, including:

Minimum Requirements   :

  • •    A bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations Or Other Relevant Post-Secondary Qualifications.
  • •    A Minimum of Five Years Of Experience Of Working With In-Country Media, Including Social Media, Is Required.
  • •    Fluency In Bahasa Indonesia And English.
  • •    National of Indonesia

Technical / Functional Skills:

  • •    An Established Network With Media Either As A Journalist Or Specialist In Public Relations.
  • •    An Excellent Command Of Proven Writing And Reporting Skills In English.
  • •    Ability To Operate Under Pressure And Under Minimum Guidance.
  • •    Good Communication And Interpersonal Skills.
  • •    Strong Ability To Work In A Team Of Different Nationalities
  • •    Good Experience In Field Reporting, News Gathering And/Or Writing For A Major National Or International News Outlet Will Be A Distinct Advantage.
