The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is assisting the Ministry of Education of Kenya in the implementation UNESCO’s initiative of the Global Partnership for Education Knowledge Innovation Exchange (GPE KIX) grant Bridging Accountability for Gender Equality in Education in Kenya with the view to improve the quality of education for all in the context of the SDG4 Education 2030.
The incumbent will be responsible for the effective planning, implementation, monitoring, coordination and reporting of UNESCO’s implementation of the GPE KIX grant Bridging Accountability for Gender Equality in Education in Kenya. This project will build technical capacity and trial tools to review and generate contextually-relevant data on gender equality in and through education and training considering: the availability and distribution of resources, how gender norms, values, relationships and attitudes shape education; the form that education opportunities take and the forces that influence these; teaching and learning practices and participation; the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills that are gained through education; and outcomes from education and training.
The position falls under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Education, guidance from the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa, and the direct supervision of the Senior Education Programme Specialist/Chief of Education, UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa.
The incumbent will work closely with the UNESCO Regional Office in Nairobi, UNESCO headquarters, University College London (including the Accountability for Gender Equality in Education (AGEE) project team), the Ministry of Education, line ministries/agencies and relevant national and local partners in Kenya.
Technical support and research
Lead research in Kenya, including local data collection and analysis on gender inequalities in and through education and training.
Contribute to the drafting and dissemination of reports and policy papers based on local and national findings.
Share research outcomes and knowledge generated with national partners and consortium partners as appropriate.
Provide technical inputs on gender equality in and through education as necessary.
Coordination, organization and representation
Coordinate the setting up and convene a project steering committee in consultation with the AGEE project team, UNESCO, and the Ministry of Education – Kenya as the key ministry.
Liaise with the Ministry of Education, the National Statistics Office, line ministries/agencies and other national and local partners.
Coordinate with UNESCO Nairobi, headquarters and consortium partners.
Organize national research workshops and meetings.
Organize local missions for data collection and dissemination.
Oversee the appropriate storage and anonymization of data as per UNESCO guidelines.
Represent UNESCO in different project meetings and fora as necessary.
Assure the communications/visibility elements are prepared on a timely manner.
Planning, budgeting, M&E and reporting
Ensure timely implementation, monitoring and reporting of the Bridging Accountability for Gender Equality in Education workplan in Kenya.
Ensure timely narrative and financial reporting both within UNESCO and to external donors as appropriate and as per UNESCO guidelines.
Complete any other tasks necessary for the successful implementation of the Bridging Accountability for Gender Equality in Education project in Kenya.
Any other duties as assigned by the Chief of Education in support of the education sector

Fluency in English is required (oral and written proficiency).
Fluency in one of the local languages.
UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan etc.
The approximate annual starting salary for this post is 5619395 in shillings.
