Team (SBT) and part of the Strategy, Transformation and Assurance (STA) Directorate. We support
colleagues across the Environment Agency (EA), Defra and supply chain, to embed eMission, our
sustainability strategy. This strategy covers our ambition to be Net Zero Carbon by 2045-50 and
promotes resource optimisation, environmental net gain and benefiting people, wildlife and
communities.

What will you do?

As a Net Zero Carbon Technical Specialist, you will be paramount in delivering the EA’s
sustainability strategy in response to the climate emergency. This role will see you use your
technical expertise, deep wider context policy understanding, proactive project delivery
approach and unequivocal passion to drive the organisation to ensure reducing carbon is at the
heart of all its decision making. Typically, you will be:

  • Leading and delivering strategic projects to drive corporate decarbonisation across our
    full carbon accounts (Scope 1, 2 and 3).
  • Providing sustainable procurement and supply chain expertise
  • Collaborating with various Governmental and non-Governmental stakeholders to integrate
    sustainability into our operations and supply chain delivery.
  • Providing Net Zero and decarbonisation policy expertise to put together powerful and
    influential analysis.
  • Thinking bigger picture – driving systemic change, not an incremental change.

What will you need?

You’ll need working knowledge of the requirements of relevant carbon reporting standards and
frameworks, for example Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), Green House Gas (GHG)
protocol, Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), Taskforce on Climate-related
Financial Disclosures (TCFD), PAS 2080 and experience of using these to influence change is
essential as is.

  • Experience in inputting into environmental process or policy, or an understanding of
    relevant environmental regulations, policies, and compliance requirements at local, national,
    and international levels
  • Experience in driving environmental sustainability or transformational change into a
    complex organisation; for example, using carbon footprint analysis and /or decarbonisation
    action planning.

You’ll also possess an unequivocal passion for sustainability – you will need to understand
what we are trying to achieve and provide expertise on how we achieve it. It would be desirable
for you to have:

  • Experience in tackling scope 3 emissions.
  • Exceptional influencing and stakeholder management – to drive delivery in the midst of
    competing priorities.
  • The ability to work consistently at pace, to meet corporate delivery deadlines and
    priorities.
  • Experience of using project management and programme management tools such as Microsoft
    Project, Primavera P6 or extensive excel skills to support delivery of complex projects.
  • Experience of producing, presenting, and communicating scientifically backed evidence
    through well-developed engagement.
