The Department hosts a leading comprehensive epilepsy service providing all aspects of care for people with epilepsy from first seizure clinics to epilepsy surgery evaluations.We currently have 4 consultant neurologists. The post will be a new 5th post. We are supported by 4 epilepsy specialist nurses (with plans agreed to increase to 6) and work with a multidisciplinary team including Consultants with specialist interests in epilepsy in Neurosurgery, Neuropsychiatry, Neuropsychology and Neuroradiology.We have 4 dedicated video telemetry beds for pre-surgical evaluation for VNS and resective surgery and have access to all necessary investigations including 3T MRI, fMRI, PET, MEG, SPECT and stereoEEG techniques. We were the first UK centre to provide robotic stereoEEG and currently provide approximately 100 surgical work ups per year including 10-20 stereoEEGs.The successful candidate will take leadership responsibility for the provision of services to patients with epilepsy and Learning Disability and for the provision of specialist drug services such as Cannabidiol and Fenfluramine to the south west.The post holder will have the opportunity to report their own videoEEGs (if suitably experienced) with dedicated EEG reporting time although alternate provision for neurophysiology support may be possible if not.Main duties of the jobCommunications and Relationships:The post holder will be expected to have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues. The post holder will be empathetic and sensitive to patients needs and able to explain things clearly – particularly complex or sensitive information.Responsibility for Patient Care:The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his or her charge and for the proper functioning of the service and will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of the clinical department.Responsibility for People Management:The Post Holder will be expected to provide compassionate leadership to their clinical teams. This may include multi-agency teams within Primary and Secondary Care. They will be responsible for the supervision of junior staff within their team and will lead by example and with compassion.Teaching and Supervision of Junior Medical Staff & Students:We aim to support the development of all our doctors, whilst maintain an environment where patient and staff safety is paramount.   • Applicants must be on the specialist register via the CCT or CESR route or eligible for specialist registration within 6 months of interview.
  • Maintain Full registration with the GMC
  • MRCP or equivalent

  • Higher qualification e.g. Masters, MD, PhD
  • Epilepsy publications.
  • Evidence of additional relevant training e.g. management and leadership.).

Training and ExperienceEssential

  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of seven years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Specialist Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential. Broad and full training in the prognostication and management of disabling conditions.
  • Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
  • Clinical Governance principles

  • Evidence of leadership development programme committed to quality improvement during training
