Position description
Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and defending journalism in the 21st century, is seeking a Newsletter Editor to manage our newsletter strategy and products, working across the organization to further the impact of our work.
FPF’s first Newsletter Editor is a fast, compelling writer and editor, curating and shaping our current stable of newsletters while creating new products that reach and resonate with our dedicated audiences. You’ll learn from and grow that base of subscribers using smart analytics, email best practices, and a collaborative team approach. You’ll use your strong project organizational skills to manage media relationships through press releases and serve our audiences, wherever they are.
This position reports to our Vice President of Editorial and collaborates across all internal programs and external stakeholders to ensure that FPF’s advocacy campaigns, digital security expertise, technology projects, and press freedom reporting achieve maximum visibility and reach.
Responsibilities
- Edit, write, and publish programmatic newsletter content, including press releases.
- Use data and feedback to identify opportunities to grow new newsletter products, and lead the creation and success of those products.
- Regularly connect with newsletter stakeholders in the organization to collaborate on short- and long-term priorities for each program.
- Coordinate, track, and share the success of the newsletter program on an ongoing basis.
- Bring a keen multimedia editing eye to sharpen and disseminate our work in multiple formats across our platforms (Mailchimp, LinkedIn, other social media platforms).
- Work with stakeholders to set best practices for connecting with the media and our current audience while growing space for both, and lead on the conversion, retention, and promotion of these efforts.
- Other audience-focused editing support as assigned.
Qualifications
As FPF’s Newsletter Editor, you’re passionate about press freedom and newsgathering rights and confident in your ability to make sure these essential topics reach and resonate with our incredible audiences. You’ll lead and execute newsletter growth with your strong multiplatform writing and editing skills.
Must have
- A passion for the First Amendment and protecting the press freedom rights of all.
- 3+ years copy editing experience, familiarity with AP stylebook a plus.
- Prior experience supporting or running a newsletter program for a digital news organization, including authoring and editing of newsletters for varied audiences.
- Familiarity with audience analytic and newsletter platforms (Mailchimp, Google Analytics, etc.) and publishing back-ends (we use Wagtail).
- Experience in audio and visual editing on tight deadlines.
- A strong understanding of copy standards and proofreading methods.
- Impeccable writing skills and ability to shape complex stories and issues into succinct, accessible language for multiple audiences.
- Good news judgment and political awareness.
- Basic knowledge or expertise in encryption and secure newsgathering tools.
- Basic understanding of HTML.
- An independent yet collaborative approach; reliable team player adept at working with remote management and staff.
- Strong project management skills, meticulous attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to set priorities and complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Openness to explore, learn, and stay abreast of new developments and tools in a rapidly evolving journalistic landscape.
Preferred
- Other multimedia skills, including in editing and creation of graphics and infographics (Adobe Suite, Figma, and others).
- Newsroom experience.
- Fluency in Spanish language.
Working with us
This is a full-time role with a competitive nonprofit annual salary in the range of $100–110k, depending on experience and location. This position reports to FPF’s VP of Editorial and will preferably be based near FPF’s Brooklyn, New York, headquarters; however, strong U.S.-based remote candidates will also be considered.
