This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join a spectroscopy-focussed team within a multi-disciplinary analytical department, delivering expert solution-state NMR and vibrational spectroscopy support to a range of projects from discovery phases through development phases to marketing. Applications in small molecules, oligonucleotides, protein therapeutics and drug products will all form part of this exciting role.Working in a flexible team which spans solution-state NMR, solid-state NMR and vibrational spectroscopy, the successful candidate will undertake NMR analysis, as well as vibrational spectroscopy, supporting problem solving and product development for multiple projects with diverse challenges. This may include structure elucidation, development and validation of quantitative methodologies, mixture analysis, multinuclear NMR, IR and Raman. The successful candidate will also work alongside other multi-faceted scientists as part of cross-functional project teams and will work with a high level of autonomy and accountability, contributing to regulatory submissions and overseeing the completion of work packages to deadlines.Primary responsibilities and duties of this role, under the guidance of a team leader, include:

  • To work as part of a spectroscopy team within a wider analytical department, to provide NMR and vibrational spectroscopy analysis and interpretation for drug substances and drug products through project lifecycles from Discovery through Development to Marketing
  • To suggest, develop and apply innovative experimental approaches, evaluate results and provide reports on work performed
  • To evaluate, introduce and apply new methodology, workflows and technology in solution NMR, contributing to the strategic development of the spectroscopy group
  • To actively work in global, multi-disciplinary project teams including analysts, chemists, formulators and others to solve problems by the most effective route, using a knowledge of other key analytical techniques, including mass spectrometry, vibrational spectroscopy, computer modelling and others
  • To troubleshoot experimental and instrumental problems
  • To comply with the requirements of Quality, Safety and GSK policies and procedures and ensure that GSK intellectual property is protected
  • To contribute as part of a diverse and dynamic department to delivery of all aspects of work contributing to progression of the portfolio, including critical digital and data-based objectives

Essential Qualifications/Experience:

  • BSc or PhD (or equivalents) in Chemistry or Physical Chemistry or related subject, preferably in an NMR spectroscopy-related discipline
  • Experience in the application of NMR in the study of small molecule organic materials
  • Understanding and knowledge of state-of-the-art NMR spectroscopy, NMR techniques and instrumentation and the wide range of NMR applications in the pharmaceutical (or related) industry, potentially with experience developing and implementing novel solution-state NMR methodology in this area
  • Self-motivated flexible approach with good organizational/project management skills, strong ability to communicate in a scientific manner, good interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and problem solve with a track record of generating high quality data and reports
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively build networks and relationships that instil confidence, trust and teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience:

  • Experience of the use of NMR in structure elucidation of small molecule organic materials and/or oligonucleotides, and in developing, novel methodology, ideally in the pharmaceutical (or related) industry,
  • Experience of analysis of small molecules/ polymorphs by vibrational spectroscopy (IR and Raman) techniques
  • Experience in regulated GxP laboratory working, including an understanding or experience of method validation requirements
  • Knowledge and understanding of Digital, Data and Analytics principles, tools and approaches, and ideally experience of implementing such tools and workflows to deliver efficient ways of working
  • Knowledge of other structural analysis techniques and the way to use these techniques complementarily, e.g. solid-state NMR, XRPD, single crystal X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry, etc
