The RAP program sees urgent paediatric referrals for various concerns from the Emergency Department and community. Future growth and expansion of this role may include inpatient rounding across the children’s program. Newborn assessment and care as well as knowledge of pediatric conditions and developmental stages required. The NP is an expert clinician who develops a therapeutic relationship, provides history, physical, and diagnostic assessment to establish a plan of care and expedite timely disposition and safe care for children. Nurse Practitioners are accountable to the Nurse Practitioner practice standard (CNO, 2023 41038_strdrnec.pdf (cno.org) in addition to the other practice standards and guidelines all nurses must follow. The Nurse Practitioner demonstrates autonomy by assuming and having sole accountability and the authority to independently communicate a diagnosis, prescribe drugs and order a range of diagnostic tests within the scope of practice. In collaboration with the pediatrician on call/designate, the NP will:

  • Review referrals received through community sources and local emergency department(s) for appropriateness for children’s clinic
  • Inpatient support, rounding, documentation and treatment support as required (future growth)
  • Perform history & physical, documentation of findings and provide and communicate a treatment plan
  • Communicate when appropriate with the Paediatrician on call or designate as well as referral provider
  • Order appropriate diagnostic testing and reviews results
  • Provide a collaborate approach to care and involve allied health team when appropriate
  • Inform patient, family and providers of findings and required follow up

At Grand River Hospital, our Nurse Practitioners (PCNP/EC RN):

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses as a Nurse Practitioner (Registered Nurse in the Extended Class) with no practice restrictions
  • Preference given to nurses who hold a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Certification.
  • Knowledge of a variety of paediatric conditions at various stages of development as well as strong newborn assessment and treatment skills
  • Masters of Science (Nursing) or a masters in a relevant discipline preferred
  • Ability to be self-directed and work autonomously
  • Ability to function within a collaborative practice model
  • A comprehensive knowledge base and high degree of clinical competence in children’s care- a minimum of 5 years of clinical practice is required
  • Ability to asses, manage, direct, and provide comprehensive care for patients 17 years old and under while working in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Knowledge or willing to learn children cancer care regimes and care
  • Ability to practice in a family centered care philosophy
  • Current certification in PALS, NRP and Breastfeeding Course required – may obtain after hire
  • Client service oriented, ability to effectively work from a diversity, equity and inclusion lens
  • Ability to support patient program development is necessary
  • Ability to promote professional education and advances knowledge through research and scholarly activities as necessary
  • Good attendance record
