The McGill University Department of Surgery, Division of Orthopedic Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position, Open Rank (Clinical), based at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.The Department of Surgery is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The successful candidate will join an academic and high-volume comprehensive Orthopedic Division at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC)—a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.Job Duties:
The successful candidate will be expected to conduct clinical duties in spine surgery, delivering high-quality patient care. They will also be expected to teach and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows and be expected to lead and contribute to research projects either in clinical, translational, or basic research in spine surgery.The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the Division of Orthopedic Surgery and be expected to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm, and excellence in surgical education. The incumbent is a dynamic and innovative academic spine surgeon who will join the renowned Joint Neuro-Orthopedic Spine Group at the MUHC. They will be expected to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to advance academic and clinical initiatives, as well as to participate in the development and enhancement of the educational curriculum related to spine surgery.The incumbent will play a key role in advancing our mission to deliver outstanding patient care, contribute to cutting-edge research, and provide exceptional education to the next generation of surgeons. Teaching activity will include both didactic and clinical teaching.The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees.All McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.Qualifications and Education Requirements:Candidates must:Hold an MD degree, and must hold or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec;Have a FRCSC in Orthopedic Surgery and/or Neurosurgery (or equivalent);Have completed a residency in either orthopedic surgery or neurosurgery, with subsequent board certification;Possess a Fellowship training in Spine surgery with proficiency or interest in one of the following subspecialties in spine surgery: Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS); Spine Endoscopy; Degenerative Scoliosis. Candidates should be proficient in at least one, demonstrating a commitment to staying at the forefront of advancements in the field with experience in endoscopic procedures;Have expertise in Motion Sparing Techniques with demonstrated experience in motion-sparing techniques for spine surgery—showcasing a comprehensive skill set;Possess demonstrable interest in teaching excellence and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows; previous experience in academic teaching roles will be considered an asset;Have relevant leadership skills with demonstrated ability to lead a diverse group of research teams, fostering collaboration and driving excellence in spinal research;Have a vision for elevating McGill’s standing in spine surgery research and be dedicated to enhancing both clinical and basic science research initiatives;Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary skills to practice medicine in Quebec.
