The extensive product range includes targeting lasers, stabilised laser delivery systems, electro-optic imaging and surveillance systems.This position has been created during an exciting period of technology development and business growth, with Leonardo at the forefront of designing and manufacturing the next generation of compact and sophisticated electro optical systems for emerging defence applications.What you will do as an Optical Engineer (All Levels).As an Optical Engineer, you will be part of specialist group tasked with developing compact and advanced optical systems. You will investigate new technologies and engineering capabilities to address emerging business opportunities.You will be involved in the research, design, development and manufacture phases of the product lifecycle. You will assume responsibility for the delivery of all optical design aspects of a product whilst working within a multidisciplinary project team where you will collaborate closely with other domain experts. You will champion rigorous optical engineering approaches and drive the delivery of robust and cost-effective design solutions. You will have a great opportunity to liaise with the customer community and have regular interactions with the external supply chain.As an Optical Engineer you will contribute to system architecture definition, specify and develop lens designs, carry out analysis and performance simulations. You will also support the integration and test of systems and work closely with manufacturing colleagues and suppliers to ensure the delivery of high quality products.You will provide capability in modelling or designing imaging lenses and optical systems using appropriate commercial tools such as ZEMAX OpticStudio, CodeV or equivalent. You will provide practical skills in a laboratory or manufacturing environment and often engage with external stakeholders. You will be provided with the environment to work your own initiative within a project team environment and demonstrate ownership of work packages.What we are looking for::

  • Experience of Lens Design and Optical Analysis.
  • Knowledge of the practical aspects of system alignment, integration and test.
  • Experience working in an Optical product development and/or Optical applied research environment.
  • Experience in the design, characterisation and manufacture of an Optical System using appropriate commercial tools.
  • An appreciation of the mechanical and electrical challenges associated with electro-optical systems.
  • Previous ownership of an Optical design which has been manufactured (in one off or volume production)
  • An advanced understanding in classical optics principles.
  • Experience with optical design of a SWIR or MIR Optical Systems.
  • Experience with technical proposal writing, project budgeting and team leadership
  • The role requires good interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Qualifications:
  • Essential – Related Master’s degree (e.g. Physics).
  • Desirable – PhD with a significant applied optical content.
