Job description
Objective:This position’s main objective is to manage the Process and Quality departments in order to achieve optimized equipment performance, ensure the technical excellence with respect to quality control and assurance of cement products produced and lead a team of professionals who measure and suggest improvement to processes and systems to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement, while ensuring safety, environmental, quality and cost targets are continuously met and improved upon.Responsibilities:
- Serve as a role model in the areas of safety, environmental stewardship, leadership, teamwork, customer focus, and continuous improvement to ensure alignment with the company’s vision and critical success factors.
- Supervise, coach and develop three salaried direct reports: Quality Coordinator, Laboratory Supervisor and Process Engineer.
Quality
- Overall responsibility for quality control and quality assurance of cement produced at the plant.
- Set the direction of plant QA & QC such that continuous improvement is realized with respect to the corporate quality initiatives.
- Together with the QC Coordinator interfaces with raw material suppliers to ensure specifications are met; maintains regular contact with marketing personnel for communicating present results and future expectations of product quality.
- Communicate the needs of the Quality Department to the Management Team and, in return, communicates directives to the group.
- Coordinate the activities of the Quality department with the various plant departments in support of plant initiatives and objectives.
- Provide support and direction to Laboratory Technicians and technical support for Process Operators. Provide daily Quality instructions for Production and Shipping Departments.
- Keep abreast of the current plant processing operations and procedures as well as their impact on product quality.
- Responsible for the testing and reporting of the quality and consistency of all products shipped.
- Maintain an awareness of technical developments (new products, customer needs), and ensure that appropriate changes are implemented. Coordinate from a plant perspective the troubleshooting and resolution of customer complaints.
- Participate in the development of periodic forecasts of manufacturing efficiencies, costs and profits (budgets, weekly and daily production runs) and for reviewing daily the plant operating performances to ensure adherence to corporation technical plans, quality standards, and optimum production practices.
- Be familiar with and support the plant’s API Quality Insurance Program including being aware of any specific duties outlined in the program.
- Provide support to Technical Sales Representatives and Sales Representatives for the promotion of cement products, and work with the Technical Sales group to define the appropriate competitive quality targets for the cements, in consideration of the plant’s process capability.
Process
- Monitor the process performance of the entire plant on a day to day basis and define corrective actions together with Maintenance, Production and Quality departments.
- Optimize plant equipment (Quarry to Finish Mills) performance as measured through KPI’s (eg. PRI, NAI, MTBF’s, STEC, HLC, etc) over the short, mid and long term.
- Ensure that the production of the raw mix, clinker and cement conforms to quality and production demands.
- Define an audit plan and supervise the audits to detect irregularities and find potential improvements.
- Develop product and manufacturing improvement proposals, present cost justifications for these and other capital improvements to the Plant Manager, as well as, to ensure compliance.
- Develop and implement optimization plans/proposals in conjunction with the Production Manager, Maintenance Manager, and Environment Coordinator and proposals regarding automation.
- Develop training and improvement initiatives for department to meet both short and long term plant goals
- Conduct and assign process inspections and performance review on a daily basis.
- Identify and conduct studies, audits, tests and measurements within the Process department in order to improve performance.
- Ensure audits and studies are documented and shared.
- Contribute to fuel cost optimization (optimization of lowest fuel cost) by ensuring (optimising) process condition which allows a maximum utilisation of alternative fuel and raw materials.
- Identify actions targeting the reduction of overall plant power consumption.
- Identify and preparing for mid and long terms process and environmental improvement needs.
- Ensure the existence and correctness of process related SOP’s.
- Foster an awareness of process requirements within all departments.
- Liaise with other department heads to ensure that the safety, maintenance, process, quality, environment, and administrative aspects of the operation are meeting the plant objectives.

- Promotion and implementation of safe work practices and procedures.
- Developing direct reports in terms of knowledge and abilities.
- Establishing process targets to ensure the requirements of environmental regulations are continuously met.
- Optimization of plant equipment performance through establishing, monitoring and adjusting (as required) process targets.
- Adhering to product quality standards.
Qualification Profile:
- Bachelor of Engineering degree (Chemical, Industrial or similar).
- At least five years cement manufacturing experience.
- Excellent knowledge of cement technology and manufacturing process.
- Must have a sound knowledge of cement performance and properties, and the relationships between process parameters and end product characteristics. Ensuring uniform product means the scope of work is broad; from design, implementation and follow-up of unique and finite projects to the routine evaluation of cement quality data.
- Excellent leadership ability and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to interact with plant and regional personnel.
- Ability to work on many tasks at the same time while keeping excellent organizational skills.
- Very strong computer skills.
- Strong communicator
- Highly motivated with ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated commitment to achieving organizational and personal goals.
- Proven ability to work well in a team environment (co-workers, suppliers, etc.).
