Outreach Adviser – Agroforestry

The Woodland Trust is looking for an Outreach Adviser (Agroforestry) in the South West. The Outreach Adviser (Agroforestry) leads delivery of the Woodland Trust’s agroforestry work with farmers and landowners across Devon and Cornwall, acting as the local lead for the Sainsbury’s Supply Chain Resilience Programme. As a key member of the South West Outreach team, the role contributes to the delivery of regional priorities and the Rainforest Recovery Treescape by increasing the uptake of agroforestry, woodland creation, hedgerow restoration and sustainable woodland management on farms.

The Role:

• Lead the delivery of the South West element of the Sainsbury’s Supply Chain Resilience Programme, ensuring project objectives, targets and outcomes are achieved across Devon and Cornwall.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with farmers, landowners, supply chain partners and key stakeholders to increase engagement with agroforestry, woodland creation and farm-based tree initiatives.
• Provide expert advice and guidance on agroforestry, hedgerow creation, woodland establishment and the management of existing trees and woodlands to support sustainable farm businesses.
• Undertake farm visits and whole-farm assessments, identifying opportunities to enhance nature recovery, climate resilience and farm productivity through the integration of trees.
• Design and develop agroforestry, woodland and hedgerow projects, producing plans, reports and recommendations that support successful project delivery from concept through to implementation.
• Support landowners in securing appropriate funding opportunities and provide practical assistance to help projects progress from initial planning to on-the-ground delivery.
• Maintain accurate project, GIS and stakeholder records, contributing to monitoring, evaluation, reporting and evidence gathering to demonstrate project impact and inform future learning.
• Represent the Woodland Trust at events and industry forums, working collaboratively with colleagues, consultants and partners to share knowledge, promote best practice and strengthen the uptake of agroforestry across the region.
• This is a homebased role, requiring regular travel to locations within the Devon and Cornwall landscape and wider South West region, sometimes to remote locations. You would be expected to live within reasonable travelling distance of your area of responsibility. Occasional travel to regional offices and overnight stays will be required
• This is a fixed term contract for 12 months.
• A company vehicle will be provided for this role. Please note that our Company Vehicle Policy is under review as part of our Job Families and Contract Review project, so eligibility criteria may change.

The Candidate:

• Experience of building trusted relationships with farmers, landowners and other rural stakeholders, providing practical advice and support on land management opportunities and challenges.
• Strong knowledge of agroforestry, woodland creation, hedgerow establishment and sustainable land management, including the role of trees and woodlands in resilient farming systems.
• Experience of delivering agroforestry projects or providing technical agroforestry advice, including undertaking assessments and developing land management plans.
• Good understanding of current agricultural and environmental policy, funding programmes, grant mechanisms and opportunities for habitat creation, restoration and nature recovery.
• Proven ability to plan, prioritise and deliver projects effectively, including experience of working on externally funded programmes with defined outputs, budgets and reporting requirements.
• Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to engage a range of audiences through meetings, presentations, events and one-to-one advisory support.
• Ability to work independently across a large geographical area while collaborating effectively with colleagues, partners and external organisations to achieve shared objectives, supported by experience using Microsoft Office, GIS and other digital systems.
• Knowledge of woodland management, including ancient woodland restoration and ancient or veteran trees, with a qualification in forestry, agriculture, land management, environmental management or a related discipline, and a full UK driving licence with the ability to travel extensively, including occasional overnight stays.
