The University of Southampton is in the top 1% of universities worldwide and is one of the UK’s top 20 research-intensive universities, with an international reputation for its research, teaching, and enterprise activities. As an organisation we have more than 23,500 students and employ more than 5,500 full time equivalent staff.

The Payment Services Team provides support to the University’s activities through the smooth running of our purchase to pay and expense processes. These include many types of documents and transactions, and generate frequent payments to suppliers, staff, students, and visitors.

The role

This post is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, customer focused person to join our busy payments team.

Have significant work experience and knowledge of accounts payable processes, and a good understanding of facilitating payments to domestic, and ideally international, recipients.

Be able to effectively manage a small team to deliver excellent service.

About you

You work effectively with high volumes of transactions under tight timescales, and have a track record of delivering significant business process improvements.

You enjoy providing excellent customer service, engaging with stakeholders, and efficiently organising work activities for yourself and your team.

Drawing on your supervisory experience you will be able to clearly demonstrate excellent communication skills, supporting colleagues to achieve their required outcomes, and proactively develop your knowledge.

You will have good IT skills including the use of Microsoft Office.  Experience using Business World, or a similar finance software package, such as SAP, is preferred.

We can consider part-time or flexible working applications. A combination of home working and at Highfield Campus is expected.

Working here

As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are pro-active in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work.

We welcome applications from candidates who are committed to helping us create an inclusive work environment. We encourage applications from candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, people who identify as LGBTQ+; and people with disabilities. Committed to supporting our staff and students, we are open to a flexible working approach. We give full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly and those who have taken a career break.  We have adopted a hybrid working model across the university combining working from home with regular time on campus.

As well as additional benefits, such as a 36 hour working week, a generous holiday allowance starting at 20 days annual leave (increasing to 24 days after 4 years of service), plus a further 6 university closure days and 8 UK bank holidays.  We’ll support your long-term future with access to a pension scheme, subsidised health and fitness facilities and a range of discounts. We are committed to supporting our staff and students, and are open to flexible working approaches; giving consideration to part time applications.
