Job description

Job Description:Grade UE07: £39,347 to £46,974 per annum.School of Chemistry / CSEFull-Time: 35 hours per week.Fixed Term: For 24 months. (Start Date 1st November 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter). The Opportunity:A postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) position is available starting 1st November 2024 (or as soon as possible thereafter) This is a 24 month position subject to successful completion of a 12 months probation period. The PDRA will be supervised by Prof. Michael Ingleson (MI) and is based in the School of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. The PDRA will work as part of an integrated multidisciplinary team on the EPSRC Programme Grant “Boron: Beyond the Reagent”. This is a large collaborative grant with a team of researchers from the University of Edinburgh, the University of St Andrews, and the University of Manchester. This specific position is expected to involve close interactions with Prof. Neil McKeown / Prof. Eli Zysman-Colman and fits within the Functional Organic Materials Work Package of the Organoboron Programme Grant.Borylated compounds are of fundamental importance across the chemical industry and increasingly important within the biological sciences. These molecules underpin the most widely used transformations in synthetic chemistry (on small and large scale), are integral to some of the most widely used imaging agents, and emerging as key warheads in contemporary drug design. Yet due to a lack of fundamental understanding, predictability, and control, few reaction classes are used widely in synthetic chemistry, only one primary class of fluorophore is used, and they remain underexplored in functional materials. The primary objective of this Programme Grant is to initiate a transformative new phase of boron research to enable multi-scale applications across chemical, materials, and biological sciences, and thereby provide a gateway to future technologies. This is an exciting opportunity to join a large, dynamic cross-disciplinary collaboration. Co-workers will be part of a network of PDRAs and PhD students, supported by a team of nine academics and colleagues from across the chemical industry (including pharma, agrochemical, and materials industries).Applicants must hold a PhD in Chemistry in an area related to the themes described above (or be close to completion at the time of application). You will be expected to manage your own academic research and administrative activities, and contribute to the operation of the Programme Grant team. This will involve small-scale project management, to coordinate multiple aspects of work for presentations, publications, and deadlines. You will test hypotheses and analyse scientific data from a variety of sources and from across the team, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as required to meet the objectives of the various work packages. For informal enquires please contact: Michael Ingleson atYour skills and attributes for success:

Between now and 2030 we will do that with a values-led approach to teaching, research and innovation, and through the strength of our relationships, both locally and globally.About the Team:The School of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh has a long and distinguished history. The first Chemistry Professor was appointed to the Chair in 1713 and the Edinburgh University student-led Chemical Society is regarded as the oldest chemical society in the world. The School is run as a single academic unit with approximately 160 staff (made up of academic, postdoctoral researchers and professional services staff) and 800 students (undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research students). Our vision is for all students and staff to harness their curiosity, utilising outstanding and diverse talents to pursue knowledge that can be used to tackle global challenges and improve people’s lives. Sustainability, collaboration and inclusion are at the heart of all our school activities.School of Chemistry researchers deliver advances in both core and interdisciplinary chemistry across five overlapping themes: Catalysis & Synthesis, the Chemistry-Biology Interface, Functional Materials, Structural Chemistry & Chemical Dynamics, and Energy, Environment & Sustainable Chemistry. Our research underpins solutions to major global challenges including health, climate change, and sustainability, and we collaborate extensively with other disciplines and industry partners to take our research towards use. Our 55 group leaders work with a similar number of postdoctoral researchers and approx.155 research students to deliver £32M of current research grants across government, charity and industry funders, as well as a wide variety of public engagement activities.Along with the University of St Andrews we formed EaStCHEM in 2004 to combine the research activities of two of Scotland’s leading schools of chemistry. Combined, we are the largest chemistry unit research in the UK. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), we were one of only three chemistry submissions to achieve a 100% “world-leading” score for our research environment. We hold a Silver Athena SWAN award, in recognition of excellence in science, engineering and technology employment in higher education relating to supporting women in Science. We are particularly proud of establishing the Christina Miller Fellowships, which have enabled seven talented postdoctoral researchers from under-represented groups to establish themselves as independent group leaders. For further information about our school is available on the ( ) (opens in a new browser tab).
