PhD Student (Tutor) – Peer LearningJob PurposeTo work alongside members of staff in Student Learning Development (SLD) in the delivery of peer-enabled activity across the institution; to offer subsequent peer learning development support to undergraduates and taught postgraduates; to provide one-to-one meetings and sessions on peer learning issues to undergraduates and to taught postgraduates; to assist in the delivery and implementation of the relevant College-level SLD provision.***This position is open to current Glasgow University PhD students and those graduated in the last 3 years with a PhD and still employed at Glasgow University***Main Duties and Responsibilities1. To design, deliver and evaluate small and/or large classes and seminar groups to support undergraduate and taught postgraduate students in peer learning.2. To assist in organisation and attendance at the classes and seminar groups.3. To identify key resources to assist students to develop peer-enabled activity.4. To assist in the organisation and delivery of the relevant College-level SLD peer-enabled activity (in conjunction with the relevant SLD and College staff).5. To offer tailored support, advice and guidance concerning peer-enabled activity through the provision of individual appointments to undergraduate and taught postgraduate students.6. To design and deliver peer-enabled activity workshops where appropriate.7. To provide students with help with coursework, but not directly with the content or methodology of coursework.8. To engage in professional development to remain current and ensure application of recent advances in knowledge to teaching, and specifically around peer-enabled activity.Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and ExperienceKnowledge/QualificationsEssential:
A1 A first degree or equivalent in a relevant subject.A2 An understanding of academic skills needs of undergraduate and taught postgraduate students in a subject relevant to college remit.
A3 Familiarity with Virtual Leaning Environments.Desirable:B1 A postgraduate teaching qualification and/or Experience of working in Higher Education.
B2 Understanding of the role of technology in supporting student learning.B3 Completion of Glasgow University’s Graduate Teaching Assistant training.SkillsEssential:
C1 Excellent communication skills (written and oral).C2 Ability to take initiative and work independently.
C3 Ability to prioritise own work and meet strict deadlines.C4 Ability to work as part of a team.
C5 Proven analytical and problem solving ability.C6 Ability to adapt teaching approach to the needs of the class.
C7 Ability to deal professionally, sensitively and tactfully with students in one to one and group settings.C8 Ability to work in a sensitive, ethical and legal manner with students in accordance with all relevant legislation.
C9 Ability to produce creative learning materials to support the development of students’ academic skills relating to the Service’s remit.#Desirable:D1 Ability to personalise and deliver relevant learning resources.ExperienceEssential:
E1 Currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Glasgow or having graduated with a PhD in the past 3 years and still employed at the University of Glasgow.E2 Experience of delivering workshops, seminars, conducting one-to-one and small group discussions.Desirable:
