About us The UCL Division of Medicine is offering a fully funded 3 year PhD studentship within UCL Renal Medicine to a highly motivated candidate. The studentship is expected to start 1st of November 2024. The Centre for Genetics and Genomics at the UCL Department of Renal Medicine is a multidisciplinary research group with a strong focus on data analysis, with a strong track record in genetic analysis of kidney diseases. The current proposal focuses on understanding how genetic variants increase the risk of a particular autoimmune kidney disorder (Steroid Sensitive Nephrotic Syndrome) to enhance our understanding of autoimmune disorders.About the role The PhD Student will be based at the Royal Free Hospital campus of UCL. The main purpose of this project is to understand the molecular basis of steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS), a prevalent kidney disease in children, especially among Asian populations. By using advanced genomic technologies, we aim to identify genetic variations associated with SSNS to develop targeted treatments with fewer side effects. This research involves sequencing the genomes of 100 South-Asian children with SSNS and 100 matched controls, utilizing a new technology that combines long- and short-read sequencing for high-resolution analysis. The main duties of the successful candidate will be to conduct original research related to the project, participate in data generation and quality assessment, analyze large-scale biological datasets using bioinformatics tools, and develop and maintain analysis pipelines for genomic data. They will also record, analyze, and write up experimental results, prepare and present research findings to colleagues, contribute to drafting and submitting papers to peer-reviewed journals, present research at conferences, and mentor undergraduate students.
