ENG202Supervisors: Dr Tabish Mir, Prof. Chris Gerada, Prof. Michele Degano, Dr Tianjie ZhouDesign and Control of Motor Drives for High Performance Automotive ApplicationsBackground: The future of e-mobility will see technologies competing in cost, power density and efficiency. These features can be achieved through new approaches in the design of electric motors which will need to be augmented through innovations in the design and control power converters driving these motors. As means of providing a holistic automotive solution, this PhD studentship will be based on the design of power converters to support and enhance the performance of next generation motor designs for e-mobility. The successful candidate will design a prototype and develop control algorithms for high performance motor drive applications, focussing on wide bandgap semi-conductor technology for high power density and advanced motor control algorithms for enhanced torque quality and increased efficiency. Through this PhD studentship, the student will gain insights in simulation and prototyping of motor drive systems, which are enabling technologies for transport decarbonization.Applications for this PhD position are invited at the Power Electronics and Machines Centre, University of Nottingham. Based in a recently built £18M facility at Jubilee Campus, the Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Group is globally renowned and one of the leading in its field.Entry Requirements: For this position, we are actively looking for candidates with

  • A first-class undergraduate degree in Electrical and/or Electronics Engineering.
