PhD Studentship in the Centre for Equalities in Uniformed Public Services

About the Project

Applications are invited for a fully funded studentship starting in September 2024, based in Chelmsford at ARU’s Centre for Equalities in Uniformed Public Services.

In 2024 ARU received a significant investment from UKRI/Expanding Excellence in England (E3) Fund to establish a new Centre for Equalities in Uniformed Public Services (CEqUPS). The Centre draws together expertise in two of ARU’s highest performing research institutes, the Veterans and Families Institute (VFI) and Policing Institute for the Eastern Region (PIER). Both VFI (April 2014) and PIER (June 2016) were established through strategic investments by ARU in response to a need for applied research to inform and improve the health and wellbeing of veterans, service personnel and their families, and to underpin developments in policing and crime. CEqUPS will work directly with uniformed public service organisations to improve public services cultures – and remove barriers to equality, diversity and inclusion – through excellent underpinning research and collaboration.

We encourage applicants to think broadly and creatively when preparing applications. You may, for example, draw on the need for change in equality, diversity and inclusion studies. Consider gaps between policy and practice, define the action knowledge required to improve the uniformed public services.

We seek applications from an ambitious, highly motivated qualitative/quantitative/mixed methods researchers to design, execute and complete an innovative fully funded PhD research project that will have real world impact. This PhD is particularly suited to candidates with strong links to the uniformed public services in the East of England.

This is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of research agenda of CEqUPS, working with regional and national partners to deliver impactful research and innovation whilst at the same time developing your own career.

This PhD will be supervised by CEqUPS in collaboration with PIER and VFI. To discuss a research project, please contact: Prof. Matt Fossey
